To borrow from Justin Bieber‘s own “Sorry” lyrics, we’ve watched his new dance video — released on Oct. 22 — “maybe once or twice. By once or twice I mean maybe a couple of hundred times.” And we’re sorry we’re not sorry that we absolutely love all of the style and beauty aspects, from the ’90s-era rainbow outfits to the popping red lipstick each of the girls wore.
Parris Geobel (that’s her in the black track jacket in the GIF above), the brains behind the vision of the video, the dance moves, and even the outfits, told Us Weekly that the whole vibe of the energetic clip was “colorful, fun, and upbeat.”
Rather than employing a stylist, a makeup artist, or calling in clothing, the dance crew in the video, Goebel’s ReQuest Dance Crew, put their looks together themselves. “[We wanted to] just bring more life to it. We were going for a vintage ’90s vibe,” the New Zealand-based choreographer told Us. “Me and two of my friends pretty much styled everyone. We all did our own makeup and were spontaneous… Most of it was my wardrobe, actually. We just kind of put together what we had.”
When the wardrobe and the dance moves weren’t stealing the show, the ladies’ lips were. Asked if each member of the crew was sporting the same shade, Geobel said, “Yeah! We were! It was a Mac color — Ruby Woo.”
Everything about the music video was spur of the moment, according to Geobel. “The word that comes to mind is ‘spontaneous.’ Nothing was planned too much, not even the dancing. It was more like, ‘How do we feel on the spot?'” the choreographer explained.
In fact, the idea behind the video itself changed capriciously once Bieber’s team saw the finished product. “It was originally meant to be a lyric video,” Geobel told Us. “I guess they liked it so much that they just kept it a dance video.”
And if it looks like everyone in the video is having the time of their lives, it’s because they’ve known each other forever. “I’ve been dancing with these girls for years,” Geobel says. “There were no auditions, it was just natural.”
