Selena Gomez just made a major political statement in the chicest way possible.
On Wednesday, June 12, the 26-year-old actress appeared on Live With Kelly and Ryan looking gorgeous in a blue print Chanel dress styled by Kate Young. She accessorized the number with a gold 1973 necklace from Sophie Ratner. As beautiful as the delicate piece of jewelry is, there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.
The gold bling is part of the jewelry designer’s collaboration with Physicians for Reproductive Health — an advocacy group that supports women’s reproductive health care. In honor of the 45th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the necklace marks the year that the Supreme Court decision was passed to protect women’s abortion rights.
With every purchase of a necklace 30 percent of the proceeds are donated to the organization, “to help them continue their important work,” according to the brand’s website.
There are two other necklaces that are a part of this charity collection: a silver one and another gold version featuring diamonds.
The gold item seen on Gomez is priced in the middle at $380. The silver pick is much more affordable at $115 and the diamond stunner is a bit pricier, costing $850.
The company shared a close-up of Gomez wearing the necklace, writing, “Thank you so much for your support of women’s reproductive health and equal rights.”
The founder and creative director Sophie Ratner told Bustle just how important the line of 1973 necklaces are to her.
“Growing up with a mother who is an OBGYN has always shown me the importance of equality in healthcare and particularly with women’s reproductive health,” Ratner told the online publication. “I’ve always believed that everybody should have the choice to make their own decisions about their bodies and more now than ever it is important to fight for this, which is what inspired our 1973 piece and our collaboration with Physicians for Reproductive Health.”
