While everyone’s dying for the tea on Michelle Obama and Melania Trump’s Thursday, November 10, meeting at the White House, we’ll be satisfied with the first ladies’ dress details.
Obama, 52, hosted the future first lady in the Yellow Oval Room while their husbands, President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump, met in the Oval Office. For the sit-down, where the two discussed raising children in the White House, Michelle stunned in a dress that we’ve seen before: a purple Narciso Rodriguez sheath with tie-dye details, quarter-length sleeves and a belt. The mom of Sasha and Malia first wore the number upon her arrival in Argentina during a March 2016 trip. But instead of teaming it with dark pumps as she did in the spring, Miichelle added a touch of shine with mirrored metallic silver pumps.
It appears that Michelle took a page from Hillary Clinton’s sartorial book with her color choice. Like the Democratic presidential nominee, she picked purple, the color of bipartisanship. Red (the hue of the Republican Party) and blue (the Democratic Party’s shade) mixed together create purple’s pigment.
Of course, this isn’t Michelle’s first time choosing the New York–based designer. When President Obama won his first election in November 2008, she went bold in a red-and-black cocktail dress to celebrate the historic accomplishment at Grant Park in Chicago. And for her last State of the Union address, she stood out in a marigold sleeveless sheath.
While Michelle played with color, Melania, 46, stuck to a simple sleeveless black dress. The former model, who wore a white Ralph Lauren jumpsuit on election night, accessorized the piece with black Christian Louboutin pumps and a black peacoat lined with crochet trim.
