Famous Resting Bitch Faces From the Mona Lisa to Kristen Stewart

Something to smile about! Resting bitch face (the condition where one appears expressionless, irritated and generally over it without meaning to do so) is actually good for you, according to a recent study. The “not face,” which researchers from Ohio State University described as “a furrowed brow, pressed lips and a raised chin,” actually conveys a universal sense of alarm that comes in handy during times of trouble, a March study from scientific journal Cognition read. Frowners of yesteryear such as Scarlett O’Hara and current mean (looking) girls including Kristen Stewart show that Hollywood’s had the right idea for quite some time. Mona Lisa

For years, connoisseurs and scholars alike have debated the subject of this famed portrait: Is she smiling, or is she frowning? In the 1500s, Leonardo da Vinci painted her RBF purposely: "If one focuses on the eyes of the subject, the lips appear to slant delicately upwards in a tentative smile,” the Telegraph explained. “But if one looks at the mouth directly, they appear flatter."
