Serena Williams’ Brow Guru Piret Aava Dishes on Why Microblading Is Worth the Splurge (Exclusive)

"If you use a pencil to fill in your brows, you can benefit from microblading," says celebrity brow specialist Piret Aava. "It's an investment for your face," Aava reveals and "it lasts for a year to three years depending on your skin." She says, "the drier the skin, the longer it lasts and the oiler the skin, the more often you have to come in for touch ups." The major plus side of microblading? "You don't have to use a brow pencil and your brows will be symmetrical! It saves so much time and you wake up ready to go!" The eyebrow expert has clients that have alopecia or are going through chemotherapy and says microblading has been life changing for them. "Simple things that people with eyebrows take for granted like sweating at the gym, swimming in a pool, or even making out with someone and not having to worry about your eyebrows rubbing off isn't an issue anymore!"
"It takes a full week for eyebrows to heal," she says. During this time, she recommends keeping them dry for a full week and free of ointments. She advises clients to "skip facials for a full week and when you take off your makeup, use makeup wipes and work around the brow," she dishes to Stylish. "I tell my clients that they should live their lives, but to keep their eyebrows at their best, they should use sunblock on their brows so they don't change color." She also recommends to stay away from exfoliating to avoid fading them.
"Everyone has their own style for microblading," Aava explains. "There are certain techniques that you can learn in school, but it's your job to make it your own. I've been doing brows for 15 years whether it's waxing, shaping or tweezing, so I've learned what real eyebrows look like," she says. "Every brow is unique and I don't do the same thing on every client because hairs grow differently and in different directions. I try to follow where the hair grows and make it super natural," she reveals. Before getting yours done, she recommends doing research and looking at heal results and symmetry.
"First I fill in my client's eyebrows with a pencil to get the overall shape and symmetry," she says. As far as the color goes? "I match it to their eyebrow hair color so it's blended together nicely. If someone has warmer skin, I'll use a cooler tone." Another key: "I follow where the natural brow is and how the clients are used to filling them in so when they leave they don't look like a different person."
"My clients feel great after getting their eyebrows micbrobladed," Aava reveals to Stylish. "Malin, Serena and Jana love the fact that it looks so natural and their brows aren't screaming out of their faces. I deal with a lot of people who have to be on TV the next day, so I like to build their brows up and start slowly," she says. "They like that I don't overdo their brows and they won't leave my office looking crazy," she explains.
