Hung Vanngo, the man behind the flawless faces of Kate Bosworth, Selena Gomez and Rose Byrne, tells Us his secrets for radiant complexions. Keep scrolling for his tricks.
Stars’ Glowing Skin Secrets, Revealed
Dry skin cells make crow’s-feet more prominent, so exfoliate with a gentle formula such as Tatcha Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder for Normal + Combination Skin ($65, tatcha.com). “When you have smooth skin,” explains Vanngo, “you don’t have to use as much concealer later.” Puffy? Wear cooling gel patches for 10 minutes. Try Skyn Iceland’s Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30 for 16, ulta.com).
Brush? Blender? Fingers? No foundation applicator is as high-performing as a car-polishing sponge, says Vanngo. The pro, who uses oversize foam discs, suggests buffing dots of cream into skin for a second-skin effect. One favorite: Nars. (Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $44, narscosmetics.com)
Vanngo believes powder products (such as Tom Ford Soleil Contouring Compact, $108, tomford.com) deliver the most natural-looking results when swept on with a fan brush. The tool, he says, “gives you control over how much product you’re using.” A foolproof method: Blend bronzer and blush along cheekbones. Apply highlighter at the tail end of brows.
When it comes to eyes, creating dimension is key. Spread a matte cream shadow (Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in Bette, $32, charlottetilbury.com) to the crease, then dab a lighter shimmer (Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Cocoa, $29, lauramercier.com) at the center of lids and outer corners. Vanngo says his tried-and-true combo of cocoa and gold “reflects the perfect amount of light for sparkly eyes that photograph beautifully.”
Lightly dust translucent powder (Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre, $52, chanel.com) on the T-zone and crease-prone undereye area. Don’t be tempted to reapply later; overpowdering is the fastest route to cake town. Instead, use blotting sheets or spritz skin with a hydrating mist (try SK-II’s Mid-Day Essence Spray, $80, sk-ii.com).
Before reaching for a stick, let a coat of balm sink in for 15 seconds.“Moist lips reflect light,” says Vanngo, “so a mouth looks fuller.” Trace edges with a liner that matches your coloring, then tap on a sheer peach or pink lipstick (CoverGirl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick in Pink Paws, $6.94, walmart.com). “Muted tones,” he promises, “give you that sexy bombshell vibe.”
