Lorde Looks Extra Glam on Teen Vogue, Defends Dressing In Boys’ Clothing

Lorde graces the May cover of Teen Vogue
17-year-old singer Lorde gets glammed up for the cover of Teen Vogue and explains why she gets labeled as the "the grumpy girl" with her tomboy style

That you, Lorde? The 17-year-old singer is ditching her usual grunge look and plum lipstick for more of a glam glow on Teen Vogue's May cover.

The Grammy-Winning "Royals" singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, dons a simple plaid scarf on the cover and lets her locks run loose while her glowing skin and unusually bronzed cheeks stand out, not to mention her lack of dark lipstick!

When it comes to her usual appearance, Lorde is the first to admit that her style is on the plainer side. Although she understands there are "expectations in [the] industry about looking a certain way," Lorde tells the mag she prefers her tomboy look.

"I am feminine," she tells the mag, "but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labeled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that.”

And although she's declared "we'll never be royals" in her breakout song, the teen herself is beginning to adjust to her newfound fame and lifestyle.

"Living in New Zealand, you don’t get these experiences," she admits. "I spent so much time in my room before. My life is so wild right now. For me to be able to do something I really enjoy and for that to get me out in the world—to South America, to here, to London—every day I kick myself, I’m so lucky.”
