The Half-Up Ponytail Is the New Hun: Find Out How to Get the Look from Celeb Stylist Jen Atkin

Celebs made the hun (half-up bun hairstyle) a huge beauty trend in 2015. But having a big bun on the crown of your head can be a lot of look. With the new year comes a new take on the go-to for the red carpet, airport and everything in between.

Loving the idea of the hun, stars like Chrissy Teigen and Khloé Kardashian have gone for the lazy girl’s version: a volumized, half-up ponytail. The new style doesn’t require getting a topknot just so — it’s all about being artfully messy and laid-back.

“The secret is making it work for you, your face shape and your hair texture,” Jen Atkin, the celebrity hairstylist behind Teigen and Kardashian’s fierce styles, tells Us Weekly. “Play around with where the ponytail falls on your head and look at it from all angles to find something that makes you feel most confident.”

Now that the pony (and your confidence) is set, off you go! “The right time to [rock the half-up pony is] to a concert, on a date, at a bar, a basketball game, brunch, hanging with friends or making an ex jealous,” the Mane Addicts founder, who recently launched a line of hair-care products, Ouai, said.

But don’t get too adventurous. The low-key ‘do isn’t for formal events. “The wrong time to [wear the half-up pony is] a job interview, a business meeting, meeting the parents, Easter or Passover,” Atkin says.

Most important, the half-up ponytail should feel like you. Wear it with your natural hair texture, then amplify the pony with extensions or a bit of back-combing. Or try Ouai’s Texturizing Hair Spray ($26, theouai.com). “The Texturizing Hair Spray is something I always like to keep on me as it gives an instant hair refresh and root boost — it’s like if dry shampoo and hair spray had a baby!” Atkin says.
