The bold and the beautiful! Bella Thorne has been struggling with acne for years, but only recently has she decided that her zits are “beautiful.”

The Duff actress, 18, explained that she was on the potent antiacne drug Accutane for almost two years with the promise that she’d never see a pimple on her face again — but that isn’t quite how it worked out. “The [doctors] told me, ‘Nine out of 10 people never get one pimple again.’ So many things are bad for you, but when you have this thing on your face that feels like a monster… I was like, ‘OK, I’ll do it.'” That’s when she stopped to point out more than one zit: “But what’s this? And this? What’s this acne I’m still struggling with?”

Her solution? To ditch the prescriptions and start going all-natural with plant-based skincare free of toxins. While they haven’t totally eliminated the breakouts, she’s found a fresh perspective on her complexion. “I got this pimple the other day and I said to my sister, ‘Look at this! I have a press day coming up!’ And she said, ‘That’s a beautiful pimple, Bella. That is beautiful. Scars are beautiful,” Thorne, who has partnered with Burt’s Bees for its #LoveYourNature campaign, shared. “We both struggle with acne, but now, every time we get something on our face, we just say to each other, ‘That’s beautiful. I love my scars. I love my skin.’ You have to change your mind-set.”

These days, Thorne — who’s dating Pretty Little Liars alum Gregg Sulkin said, when somebody says something hurtful about her acne, she just takes a breath and says, “Love your skin. Love it. Love your nature!”

But on those days when you feel like you need a little extra boost, Thorne recommends a little wash of color. Her lipstick of choice is Burt’s Bees, and she believes the line boasts a color for everyone, no matter their skin tone. Plus, she offered Us a tip: “Always start with a lip liner. If you shade your lips before applying lipstick, you’ll really accentuate them.”
