Zac Efron is on a long list of stars who’ve gone platinum blond for the summer, and with good reason. At the Los Angeles premiere of Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates on Wednesday, June 29, the movie’s lead revealed that he’s actually flattered by the widespread comparisons to Saved by the Bell’s Zack Morris.
“Oh my gosh. My hero!” Efron, 28, told Entertainment Tonight of the character, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who rocked blond-tipped locks in 1989 just like his own.
Though the likeliness is perfect, the High School Musical alum’s real reason for the dye job is a lot less creative. “It was Baywatch, actually. Did it for a part,” he said. “I thought I had additional photography in the next upcoming weeks, so I just kind of kept it, and I just talked to the producers and they said that I don’t have to reshoot anything for about, like, a year. So I’ve just been having it for no reason.”
Efron’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates costar Adam DeVine has his own unique theory. “You’re punk rock and rock and roll,” he joked.
While Mike and Dave comes out July 8, Efron is already thinking about future projects. On the red carpet, he said that maintaining his physique for the Baywatch reboot (set to hit theaters in 2017) is hard work that he’s willing to undo.
“I would love to gain 30 pounds and play an aging rock star. That’d be an awesome transformation,” he mused.
