Amanda Bynes Is Mentally Unfit to Attend DUI Trial, Says Lawyer

Amanda Bynes did not appear in court Sept. 24 for her DUI case because she is mentally unfit to stand trial, says her lawyer.

Amanda Bynes was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Sept. 24, but she was a no-show. The 27-year-old troubled actress is currently seeking treatment at a psychiatric hospital and is reportedly unfit to stand trial.

According to TMZ, lawyer Rich Hutton told the judge in Bynes' DUI case that she doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the legal proceedings. The Easy A star's case was then transferred to the mental health court, where a hearing will be conducted to determine Bynes' mental competency.

A spokesperson from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office tells Us Weekly, "Her attorney declared a 1368 PC [Penal Code] hearing to declare a doubt to mental competency. The parties will be due back in court on January 14, 2014 for a progress report."

Bynes was arrested in April 2012 for DUI in West Hollywood, and pleaded not guilty in June. She was placed on an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold on July 22, after she started a fire on a stranger's driveway in her hometown of Thousands Oaks, Calif. The hold was extended for an additional 30 days on Aug. 9 at doctors' request, and Bynes' mom Lynn was granted temporary conservatorship over her daughter that same day.

On Aug. 15, Bynes was photographed for the first time since her psychiatric hold. The former Nickelodeon star wore a bright blue wig and covered her body with a white sheet while walking to a waiting SUV to transfer to UCLA Medical Center.
