Donna Karan revealed in her new memoir, My Journey, that she had an abortion in 1973 amidst her affair with Stephen Weiss. As previously reported, the fashion designer confessed in her tome that she had a full-fledged affair with the late artist — whom she later went on to marry — while she was still married to her ex-husband, Mark Karan.
“We weren’t sure whose child it was,” Karan explained of her decision during an interview with HuffPost Live on Friday, Nov. 19. The fashion guru added that the decision was a “difficult” one to make, “but that was the life I was living at the moment in time.”
"I said, 'I can't even fathom doing this,' and abortion had just been legalized — it was that week,” Karan recalled. “I told Mark about it and I said, 'I really think this is what I have to do, and he agreed with me and supported me completely on it."
The designer, who is now mom to three kids, shared her experience to connect with others.
"I know so many times that women really go, 'What do I do? How do I handle this?' and I wanted to show that I'm with them," she explained to HuffPost Live. "I totally understand what it's like — I went through it."
