Joe Conley has passed away. The actor, best known for his role on 1971's The Waltons, died Sunday, July 7 in Newbury Park, Calif. at the age of 85.

Conley's wife Louise told The Los Angeles Times that her husband had been battling dementia, and was living at a care facility at the time of his death.

Conley landed the role of storekeeper Ike Godsey on The Waltons in 1972. The classic CBS family drama followed the life of a mountain family living in Virginia during the Great Depression, and was based on Earl Hamner, Jr.'s book Spencer's Mountain. Conley starred on the show until it ended in 1981, and then made appearances in TV movie reunions.

The veteran actor also made guest appearances on such classic shows as Green Acres, The Brady Bunch and Knight Rider. In 2000, he played the role of Joe Wally in Tom Hank's Cast Away.
