Kanye West Lost Friends When He Started Dating Kim Kardashian, Calls Kris Jenner “Mom”

Kanye West revealed in a new interview that he lost friends when he started dating Kim Kardashian: "[They] completely turned their backs on her and me"

Love was not easy for Yeezy. Kanye West revealed in a new interview with Style.com that while he and his wife Kim Kardashian have become fashion royalty against many odds, the two shared somewhat of a rocky road to romance.

"She was always my muse, now she’s become other designers’ muses," West, 37, reflected of the reality star, 34. "Soon as we started dating, fashion people were really opposed to the idea of reality stars. And all the relationships, the somewhat friends that I had somewhat built up, completely turned their backs on her and me. They already had their back to her, and now they turned it to me."

According to West, the not-so-warm reception to his first two collections was really a blessing in disguise, essentially allowing him to start over. "The so-called traction that I was getting in the high-fashion world was completely thrown out the window and I was finally allowed to go to school," West reflected. "Every day I was in my mom [Kris Jenner]’s house, in my little brother’s old room, Rob’s old room, re-tailoring a Céline skirt, re-tailoring a Saint Laurent jacket, re-tailoring a Zara top, re-tailoring Wolford … And day by day by day, [Kim and I] learned, we got better. We looked at the photographs together and she improved my style, we improved each other."

Not one to disregard his wife's talked-about physique, West also praised it as "the body of all bodies" in the interview. The superstar rapper added that it was understood that people would react — some positively and others negatively — to his work in fashion. "This audience isn’t on my side, anyways," he said. "It’s the fashion audience. They’re not even on their own side… Fashion is merely an opinion. And I’ve got a lot of opinions."

There was, however, one personal flaw that West addressed with Style.com. The rapper's Adidas collaboration at New York Fashion Week started late last Thursday, Feb. 12, which resulted in some fussiness from his 20-month-old daughter North West, who threw a tantrum front row.

"Yeah, I apologize that people had to wait," West confessed. "That’s definitely not something I did on purpose. I actually had no idea what time it was. I wasn’t looking at the clock or in charge of that. It’s literally my first proposition [fashion show] in three years. So I apologize for the wait, to the people that had to actually wait at the New York fashion show. I apologize to the kids that had to wait in the 42 theaters where we streamed the show across the globe, I apologize to them for the wait. Let me just explain something to everyone. I’m sorry. I’m a human being. I’ve got opinions, I’m not always right, I’m not always on time, I don’t always say things in the proper way, but my intentions are always extremely pure. My purpose is extremely just."

Aside from the wait, West added that he's anticipating a more favorable reception with his third collection. "I didn’t know who I was until I had a daughter," he admitted. "And then I realized that the purpose of life was to protect her and my wife at all costs. And that is who I am." (Indeed, unbeknownst to many, little Nori was wearing a bulletproof vest designed by her dad at the Adidas show last week.)
