Madonna Defends Met Gala 2016 Outfit to ‘Ageist’ Critics: It Was a ‘Political Statement’

Save your words because you’ve gone too far, Madonna critics!

The legendary pop diva, 57, took to Instagram on Monday, May 4, to hit back at those who’ve slammed her for wearing a sexy, revealing sheer dress by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy to the Met Gala 2016.

“We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world. When it comes to Women's rights we are still in the dark ages," Madonna explained, defending her daring sartorial choice. "My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement."

We have fought and continue to fight for civil rights and gay rights around the world. When it comes to Women's rights we are still in the dark ages. My dress at the Met Ball was a political statement as well as a fashion statement. The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society. I have never thought in a limited way and I'm not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks By being fearless and By taking the road leas traveled by. Thats how we change history. If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I'm not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me‼️ As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless. I remain Unapologetic and a Rebel ❤️ in this life and all the others. Join my fight for Gender. Equality! 🙏🏻

Us Weekly Video caught up with the “Express Yourself” singer on the red carpet at the Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology–themed affair, where she told Us that she loved her outfit because “it’s light and I can jump up and down!”

In her post, Madonna also spoke out against haters who used her age as an excuse to attack her for rocking the booty and breast-baring ensemble to the prestigious Monday, May 2, fashion event.

"The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society,” the mom of four added on Instagram. “I have never thought in a limited way and I'm not going to start. We cannot effect change unless we are willing to take risks By being fearless and By taking the road leas traveled by. Thats how we change history."

She concluded by writing, "If you have a problem with the way I dress it is simply a reflection of your prejudice. I'm not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless. I remain Unapologetic and a Rebel in this life and all the others. This isn’t the first time her Madgesty has put her backside on display at the Met Gala. For the 2013 Punk: Chaos to Couture–themed party, the superstar proudly flashed her cheeks in another Givenchy design.
