Sherman Hemsley, TV's George Jefferson, Dies at 74: Report

Iconic TV actor Sherman Hemsley -- best known for his role as George Jefferson on All in the Family and its spinoff, The Jeffersons -- has died, TMZ reports. He was 74.

Citing El Paso, Texas police sources, the site reports Hemsley passed away at his home in the area. Additional circumstances were not immediately available.

Starting his entertainment industry career with a stint on Broadway's Purlie, Hemsley assumed the role of George Jefferson in 1973, alongside Isabel Sanford's Louise "Weezy" Jefferson.

In addition to his 15-year stint as George Jefferson, Hemsley appeared on TV's Amen as Deacon Ernest Frye, Dinosaurs and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His most recent role was on 2011's House of Payne.
