Staking her claim! Vanessa Hudgens opened up about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Zac Efron in a new interview with the New York Times, telling the newspaper that she had little tolerance for the teen idol’s adoring fans.

“I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up,” the High School Musical alum, 26, said of the years that she spent in a high-profile relationship with her costar Efron, now 27. “Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares.”

“I realized that’s not what that’s about,” Hudgens added. “‘Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice.'”

As she came to terms with the hoards of admirers, the Spring Breakers actress let her relationship with Efron run its course, splitting from the actor in late 2010 after more than three years together. He went on to complete a stint in rehab and is currently dating model Sami Miro after a fling with Michelle Rodriguez.

Hudgens, who found new love after the breakup in actor Austin Butler, told the New York Times that her views on other women and feminism changed as well as she grew.

“I used to be on the fence about [identifying as a feminist],” explained the performer, who is promoting her upcoming starring role in the Broadway revival of the musical Gigi. “I feel like it gets to a certain place where it almost has the reverse effect, where it’s so overpowering and so aggressive that it’s like rather than just standing up for female pride and female rights, it becomes, like, ‘I am the man.'”

“But now I feel like there’s this new wave of feminists coming up that are truly about equal rights for women,” the former child star added. “I mean, Beyonce is, like, killing the game, and I love her.”
