Athletes to Tiger Woods: Come Clean!

Monday – November 30, 2009 – 9:40am

Tiger Woods is refusing to offer up specific details about the car crash Friday that set off a slew of rumors about his marriage to Elin Nordegren.

It hardly comes as a surprise, considering that the athlete, 33, is known to be fiercely guarded when it comes to his personal life (he named his 155-foot yacht "Privacy").

But fellow athletes urge Woods -- who has blown off three meetings with authorities -- to come clean.

"I just hope he tells his side of the story about what happened," his pal, ex-NBA star Charles Barkley, tells the New York Post. "You've got to face the music, because it is what it is. Not talking about it can make it worse."

PR experts also caution that Woods should avoid the appearance of lying or covering up what happened.

"There's only two things worse than whatever really happened outside Tiger Woods' house: speculation and the appearance of a cover up,” said David Eichler, founder and creative director for David and Sam PR in Phoenix. “When you make a billion dollars by being a celebrity you have no privacy. No matter how egregious the truth is, Tiger's camp would be well served to learn from history and not try to run, hide or pretend they don't owe the public the truth."

"He's making it look like he has something to hide," said Peggy Rose of Boston-based Peggy Rose Public Relations. "If he made a mistake, admit it and move on. How he reacts will determne his future image."

In a statement Sunday, Woods said, "This is a private matter, and I want to keep it that way." He also failed to address reports that he had a fling with New York nightclub manager Rachel Uchitel. (She denies an affair.)

Woods is set to host his Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif., which benefits his foundation. A news conference is slated for Tuesday, but it is unclear if Woods would still play, or even attend.

Ok so Tiger Woods asked for us to respect his privacy… Is he in any position to make such a request? I agree, when it comes to the children, privacy should be respected. But Tiger is a grown man. Some sports news sites like Dozensport say he slept around and used his 'public image' to bed women, now he wants us all to back off. The switch of fame cannot be so easily turned off, Tiger.

uh... the title of the story was Athletes to Tiger Woods: Come Clean! i think that is a typo. It should have been Athlete. Only one was mentioned in the article.

Wow,,its amazing that public figures who enjoy the praise and admiration that comes their way, as well as all the money, don't seem to understand that there is a real obligation to the public who admire and follow their careers with complete support. Its hard to watch again and again these PUBLIC FIGURES do morally wrong things, THEN cry that they want their privacy. always remember that kids want to look up to their sports heroes.. I understand he only human, but he needs to act just like what he is, a public figure. Which makes this a public matter..

Wait until he shows up at a PGA tour event. His fellow professionals won't give him the same respect he garnered before. I think his game will suffer.
  • December 03, 2009 - 9:37am Faithfullove Says:

People, Let's not forget that he was unfaithful on so many levels. He did not just make a "mistake." If he was cheating with 2 or 3 women since before his 1st baby was born, his attention was not focused on his wife & family & it was not just a one-time mistake. He felt entitled to all the women he could possibly get. Morality is the question here, not that he should not get caught.

Dang it Tiger!!! learn to lock your phone!! you might want to send a Thank You note to your good friend Oprah for giving the tip for women to check their man's phone to see who and when he has been calling. Hello?? have you thought about getting a throw away "pay as you go" phone? It's not like you couldn't afford the minutes. Then you could claim it wasnt yours and you found it at a course and forgot to turn it in. Or maybe the good folks at At&t could hook you up with an unlisted/unregistered number? You might see what they can do for your next promo phone contract. Also you might look into getting a voice synthesizer application to run on it. Best of luck getting out of this deep rough of the lure of strange coochie. "Going where many have gone before." "Use the force, Luke." "Ride it like you stole it!!"

Dang Tiger, all that money you have and you didn't think to get a second phone?? WTF!! Forget a pre-paid GoPhone, you need a pre-paid HoePhone!

what is said is said.nobody has a right to force you to say what is contrary out of topic.people are just tryin to destroy his career.they are using the strategy of,if u cant beat him on the a ground try his personal life.they are using media style
  • December 02, 2009 - 7:20pm joammne Says:

it is really nobody's bussiness but his and his wife at this point. However if he comes clean with the public the media can't add thier two cents in and it he can hopefully move on with his life.
  • December 02, 2009 - 5:04pm really? Says:

Absurd. A public admission of adultery? We all know he cheated on his wife, we need the extra pound of flesh, the 'mea culpa' that he cheated? Like everyone else that cheats on their spouse and gets caught has to tell all of their neighbors and co-workers that they cheated??? Oh, no, it's because he has an image, he gets endorsements...bs. . . That's a business decision, not a personal one. He doesn't "owe" anybody an explanation, except his wife. If his sponsors drop him, because he chooses not to try and spin it, then so what...it's his financial loss. Oh, and how is he going to spin it..."sorry, I was married, but I chose to have meaningless sex with multiple women who made themselves available to me with full knowledge I was married. Please publicly pillory now." Get real. Oh, and btw, Deri, you naive, immature fool, women cheat as well.
  • December 02, 2009 - 2:58pm david smith Says:

this has got nothing to do with 'the public's right to know'. Tiger, if he has committed adultery?, needs to make a public admission of guilt, and a verbal/written commitment to his future behaviour and his allegiance to his family. The press will get 14 days worth of copy out of this and then there would be nothing else to speculate on - why do high profile figures believe in lying - it all comes ou in the end, when it will damage his image even more.
  • December 02, 2009 - 2:15pm Deri Says:

CHEATERS! Why are guys such CHEATERS! Don't Get Married if you want to be a SCUMB&G And sleep with SL*TS!
  • December 02, 2009 - 1:39pm Mari Says:

If Tiger and his wife are working out their problems, then so be it and leave them alone. No doubt he will be a submissive husband and mind his p's and q's from now or it will cost him a bundle in endorsements, alimony and child support.
  • December 02, 2009 - 1:06pm Ace Kabob Says:

Tiger doesn't just earn money playing golf; he trades on his public image. So long as Nike, Gatorade, AT & T, Electronic Arts, and Accenture want to cash in on that goodwill by paying Tiger to endorse their products, then this is a public matter. Tiger's fans may not like their hero's self-inflicted, or Elin-inflicted in this case, black eye, but to suddenly take up for his privacy -- when he is pimping golf equipment, sports drinks, and video games in their living rooms every day -- is ridiculous.
  • December 02, 2009 - 10:50am awwwbusted Says:

Oh snap son, busted! Tiger, you gotta hide your affairs a little better than that. It's not that hard.
  • December 02, 2009 - 10:27am Behold Says:

Boycott TW merchandise, appearances, etc. Eldrick is a scumbag, not a Tiger.
  • December 02, 2009 - 2:25am NR Davis Says:

Why? The cops investigated and decided no charges were necessary. He complied as much as mandated by law. End of story. If you want to boycott him because of gossip or because he you say he owes you because you chose to buy something he endorsed, well that says more about your own intelligence or lack thereof than anything else. He did cooperate with the cops according to the law's letter, so Tiger owes no further explanation to anyone save Elin. Being a fan of someone entitles you to nothing save enjoyment of your celeb of choice's work. Nothing. If you enjoy his golf playing, his private life should not matter to you. If you can only enjoy his athleticism if you are absolutely sure that he is a faithful spouse, again, that says more about you than about Tiger.
  • December 01, 2009 - 10:54pm KA Says:

I think you nosey people should get a life. He doesn't have to say a thing if he doesn't want to. Remember back in the old days there was a thing called PRIVACY!
  • December 01, 2009 - 10:14am Shae Says:
