Chris Brown on Rihanna's Interview: Assault Should Be "Between Us"

Friday – November 06, 2009 – 7:23pm

Chris Brown has something to say about ex-girlfriend Rihanna's revealing interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, in which the singer spoke frankly about the Feb. 8 incident in which he assaulted her.

"While I respect Rihanna's right to discuss the specific events of February 8," Brown says in a statement to MTV News, "I maintain my position that all of the details should remain a private matter between us."

In the Diane Sawyer interview, Rihanna said that Brown, 20, put her in a headlock twice and bit her on the ear and fingers. "He had no soul in his eyes," Rihanna, 21, told Sawyer. "He was clearly blacked out."

And the singer -- whose new album Rated R drops later this month -- explained why she is speaking so publicly. "I knew I had to do this in order to move on for me and in order for my fans to move on . . . I don't want that five years from now every time they see Rihanna, they think of Chris Brown beating me. That's not who I am."

She also wishes her ex well in the interview.

In his statement today, Brown continued, "I do appreciate [Rihanna's] support and wish her the best. I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions . . . Abuse of any kind is always wrong. The rest I leave it to God."

Brown was sentenced to five years of probation, six months of community service and one year of domestic violence counseling.

I am so very proud of both Chris Brown and Rihanna for speaking out on the heinous crime of domestic violence â?? no matter the whyâ??s, howâ??s and whenâ??s of it all. We VERY RARELY get to hear from the abuser concerning his (or her) contribution to the â??incidentâ??, how he feels about it, his remorse, his conviction of the crime, and his pennance to right the wrongs. Whatâ??s even better here in the Chris Brown / Rihanna saga is that we also get to see the transgressor (Chris Brown) redeem himself in a VERY public fashion by pleading for forgiveness (over & over & overâ?¦) and the opportunity for redemption. I canâ??t EVER remember a celebrity who has done such a wrong and then has humbly, vulnerably, and sacrificially put all that he has/is at the feet of the pitchforked and heavily opinionated, fickle public. And heâ??s doing it all at just 20 years old. This young man really is a MAN â?? who had a moment! And now heâ??s coming back to himself â?? renewed and retooled. As long as he continues to show and prove (and not continually apologize) his willingness and ability to change, learn and grow from the â??incidentâ??, then he will have my $15 on 12/08/09 and my continued support and prayers (and Rihanna too!).

Bump what Rihanna is saying because its not true. She came across as she truly is; a pompous, arrogant, "pay atten to me", "the world is mine", sh*t starting b*tch. Why continue an argument knowing the other person isn't gonna see it her way? What was she gonna do, beat the truth out of him?...At one point she almost had my sympathy being a former victim of DV, but I reran her words over & over again, and knew she was exaggerating many points & holding back on others. Any fool should be able to see that her description of the altercation isn't plausible. This is a very small 2-seater sports car that must be driven with 2 hands & feet most times, esp on the hilly streets of LA. Besides if you really study that picture, her wounds are more defensive, like someone getting her the f*ck off of them. I read this man is a trained martial artist & boxer, meaning if he was trying to really hurt her,she would have been knocked the f*ck out with a couple of blows. Get real, the persons whose eyes show no soul, is hers. If any of you Rihannabee's taped this, watch her eyes, her eyes are lifeless. Everything this girl does is premeditated & maneuvered for own benefit, from calling the paparazzi to take convenient pictures of her e.g him in the KFC where she clearly was looking into the camera & almost posing for the shots, to posing with her ring finger hand up on some New Years celebratory pix, insinuating they were engaged, thus starting another series of rumors. This girl is so good at manipulating the press, her fans & the general public. As far as Chris, I wish my abuser got 1 iota of the time he got! The truth is the system doesn't have the time, resources or inclination to pursue the average Dick/Jane domestic violator. Subsequently, these abusers get away with MURDER, literally! The system is ill equipped to deal with these type of abuse cases esp since, fear & limited financial resources dictate going back home with their abusers, the victims do not come forward & press charges. What's Rihanna's excuse? She can afford unlimited amounts of the most mercenary types of security. She can afford to relocate to very secure housing, (even if that means going back home to Barbados,) or JUST SAYING NO & not accepting her abuser back! She says love fueled her return to Chris? I say bullsh*t! This overly jealous, overly aggressive, overly selfish, ego tripping female, was determined that the sender of that infamous text message wasn't gonna get her property, what belonged to her & her only, Chris Brown. The only reason she's probably not with him today is because of the public backlash that she never anticipated, the hate she was getting, the fall of her empire & of course that OOP ( Order Of Protection) that she tried so diligently to get removed. Hmmm VICTIM, nahhh I think NOT!

Well they both seem at peace with each other silently, rihanna did the right thing to open up since fans are so curios.Chris is sorry ,thats a natural reaction.Stop obsessing with THEIR problem. Its obvious that in both of their interviews they still love each other, they both gave the hints. Its kinda sad that the world drags out ONE day to such an extent,THAT THESE TWO WONT BE TOGETHER because of the criticism that surrounds it.If they love each other, then they should enjoy their freedom to do so.It was a mistake! hes wrong and he knows! So what, leave it alone havent u ever F**KED up really bad and wish the memory just went away? YEA WELL THE PUBLIC IS THE MEMORY in their situation.I think that PEOPLE just love to blow up NEWS...have some compassion for both hearts, they do have them.

  • November 10, 2009 - 4:06pm VoiceOfReason Says:

Ohmigod. Are you kidding me? FIrst of all, everyone saying that it wasn't Chris Brown's fault, whatever. Whatever Rihanna did, she didn't make Chris beat her like that. No one can MAKE someone bite them and hit them... maybe he was provoked, but that in no way justifies what he did. And besides, it was his fault for texting that other woman in the first place. And second, Stacy, that's just wrong. You can't call everyone a hypocrite for 'sinning,' and then judging Chris. I mean, the we're all sinners argument is just ridiculous. And if you tell a white lie now or then, or steal a pack of gum from the store.... are you saying thats just as bad as beating up your girlfriend? No. So please, just appreciate that Chris Brown was majorly wrong in beating Rihanna and she was right to leave him, especially because she's such a big influence on young girls' lives.
  • November 10, 2009 - 3:06pm ONYX HUB Says:

I see the current and post abuse victims are doing just what they do best: Blame the real victim. Rihanna is a victim, regardless of how wrong she was for putting her hands on him. He is indeed, and obviously stronger than she... So he couldn't contain her until someone came to help? Sure she's a big girl, and should take what she throw, but for the constant beating??? biting? and an older woman whom rihanna was cool with also txting inappropriately? of course there're other sinds, but this one is deadly. I drink hard liquor, that is a sin, but i do it in the privacy of my own home... and im not risking someone elses life in the midst of my choices... By the way Ri, smart was to promote ur new album.

YOU PEOPLE ARE SUCH HYPROCRITES, EVERYONE ON THIS PANEL SINS, WHETHER IT IS INTENTIONALLY OR UNTENTIONALLY. THERE ARE MANY SINS, NOT JUST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, YOU ARE FORGETTING FORNICATION, ADULTERY, KILLING, LYING, STEALING, ETC. MANY OF YOU PEOPLE ON THIS PANEL, ARE ENGAGING IN A PARTICULAR SIN EVERYDAY...." FORNICATION". HOWEVER YOU WANT TO SIT HERE AND JUDGE THE NEXT MAN. ISN'T THAT THE KETTLE CALLING THE PLAN BLACK. CELEBRITIES MAKE MISTAKES EVERYDAY JUST LIKE WE DO, THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT THEIR LIFE IS IN THE PUBLIC. I PASS WHAT CHRIS DID, I DON'T HOLD GRUDGES OR JUDGE. I KNOW IF PEOPLE SAW, WHAT WAS IN MY CLOSET AND ANY OF YOUR GUYS CLOSET, YOU WOULD BE EMBARASSED. ITS NOT EXUSING CHRIS, ITS ABOUT REMEMBERING WE ARE ALL SINNERS, WE WETOO FALL SHORT FROM TIME TO TIME. WHEN YOU IDIOTS REALIZE THAT YOU AREN'T PERFECT AND COMMIT SINS , YOU WOULDN'T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE, BUT THEN AGAIN THATS WHAT HYPROCRITES DO. IF THE MEDIA NEVER WOULD HAVE SAW RIHANNA LIFE, SHE WOULD STILL BE WITH CHRIS. SHE JUST DON'T WANT TO LOOSE HER FANS, ENDORSEMENT DEALS AND SO FORTH

Men who beat women are pus*ies. Chris Brown is a pus*y. Period. He is not a man. He NEVER WILL BE a man. Bad role model for young men. We need to set an example with this scum. And, if the truth be known, Brown's music stunk too. He should take his pus*y self and go away. Ban his as* from radio, MTV, etc. He will NOT be missed.
  • November 10, 2009 - 10:09am Traci Says:

Well, if you wouldn't hit someone then you wouldn't get hit.She is equally to blame for the situation. Let me see his pics of his bruises. She wasn't helpless or a victim. She took the keys and throw them from the car to keep him there to get the fighting going. She is full of it. I don't condone violence but I also hate people that lies for sympathy and attention.
  • November 10, 2009 - 9:52am Truth Speaker Says:

To all the people who are saying that Rihanna is not innocent, the was to blame etc etc -- I feel very sorry for you. Hopefully you will never have to experience that pain yourself, watch you mother go through it, watch you child go through it and at the same time have people blaming you. She could have been jealous, insecure, has a temper -- whatever - and that will still not excuse what he did. Would you say the same if he did that to a child. No you wouldn't. It really just makes me sad that WOMEN in this society do not have enough pride in themselves to know that Rihanna is not to blame for Chris's actions. I am not condemning Chris or saying that he should burn in hell but I think that although their are two sides to every coin and every story -- there is always a heads and always a tails. Right is Right and Wrong is wrong and everyone posting here should be woman or man enough to know that domestic violence against women is wrong regardless of the circumstances.

  • November 09, 2009 - 8:30pm A FRIEND TO BOTH Says:

I know for a fact that Rihanna is not innocent in this. When the real truth comes out people will want to apologize to Chris.
