Exclusive: Chynna Phillips Speaks Out on Mackenzie's Affair With Dad

In her new memoir High on Arrival, actress Mackenzie Phillips reveals how she had a 10-year affair with her father, musician John Phillips of the '60s band the Mamas and the Papas.
And in the new issue of Us Weekly (on newsstands now), her half-sister Chynna Phillips of the hit 90s group Wilson Phillips shares her side of the sad story.
Chynna, 41, tells Us Weekly she remembers getting the call from Mackenzie, 49, in 1997 — 11 years after the affair had ended — while she was between flights at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.
"She said, 'I don't know why, but I just really felt the need to call you and tell you something that I think you need to know,'" Chynna tells Us Weekly. "And she went on to tell me that she had had an incestuous relationship with our dad for about 10 years."
When the affair began, John was married to his third wife, model Genevieve Waïte. Chynna's reaction, naturally, was complete shock.
"Somebody could have dropped a piano on my head and I probably wouldn't have felt it," the singer tells Us Weekly. "But I knew it was true. I mean, who in their right mind would make such a claim if it wasn't true?"
She says the news sent her into "a deep, deep sadness and depression for about 10 days. A part of me died when I found out."

In her book, Mackenzie — who, in 2008, pleaded guilty to one count of felony cocaine possession and agreed to enter an 18-month drug deferment program — also claims she and her father did drugs together. (She even tells Oprah Winfrey in an interview Wednesday, "My father shot me up for the first time.")
Chynna confirms to Us Weekly, "They were both doing drugs together.
"After long nights of heroin use, she's claiming that she once woke up and that my father was on top of her having sex with her," Chynna tells Us Weekly. "Was he actually raping her? I don't know. Do I believe that they had an incestuous relationship and that it went on for 10 years? Yes."

Shag, below, is right. Statistics show that alcoholism in a family increases risk of incest in a family. People who are addicts perform all sorts of acts born of ill judgment made worse by substance abuse and out of control behavior. -

Good for Chynna. It would be so much easier for her to try to protect her father rather than give Mackenzie her support. It seems as if she first rejected Mackenzie, then changed her mind and decided to support her. Mackenzie is very fortunate to have Chynna in her corner, as many victims of incest and other kinds of domestic abuse are further victimized by the family who do not wish to face the awful truth about an aberrant abusive behavior of a family member (which is apparently what Michelle Philips is doing by calling Mackenzie nuts). Anyone here who calls this incestuous relationship consensual is not considering what this monster parent did to "start" this dynamic between them. Sick. -

There is no doubt that this happened. Writing about it is good "therapy" but publishing the story and exposing it to the public proves that McKenzie is hoping to get more out of this than peace of mind (ie money and attention.) Issues like this belong in a therapist's office. All she is doing is making her family look worse than everyone already suspects it is. Their drugging was common knowledge and nothing she says comes as a shock considering their history. The family was and still is a train wreck. I happened to see part of the interviews on Oprah. I do think she has alot of nerve going on TV and stating how the most important thing in her life is her son. She may believe it, but actions speak louder than words, and all the years of drugging showed where her priorities lie. What a sad story. -

I recall an interview with McKenzie quite some time ago where she said "my father was more like a boyfriend to me than a father," regarding all of the drug use and lifestyle. I definitely believe it. -

I feel that this truly did happen, just as Mackenzie has stated. In the 60-70's there was allot going on. The Mama & Papa's split up due to everyone doing the other partner. We must think about this. Threw all the ups&downs, Mac & John was there for each other. When doing drugs, things get at of hand & be4 you know it. Things happen.. Taking from experience. But it's the after affect of what do I do to correct the situation or issue. It's very true that maybe John was the one that got Mac into drugs. We were not there!! For yrs, Mackenzie has tried to deal with the situation about her & her dad. But now, she's facing the true of her affair w/John. And has written this book about HER LIFE either good or bad, she is working on healing herself & loving herself. John has already been judged by God. There were times in Mac's life that she tried telling her family, but the hurt was to strong to bear. So she fall back into drugs to numb the feelings. The reason why Michelle is so pissed off at her & Oprah is because she knows that it's true & she can't bear to grasp that she loved this man. Why not Oprah show? We must remember Oprah was a incest victim herself & Mackenzie & the world has know this for awhile. To Mackenzie, you go girl & continue to work on yourself. Do Not let this get to you. I don't care how many drugs she did, if she was 18 when it started, it was consensual. It's easy to say anything about anyone if they're dead, and it reflects her character that she would exploit this story for money, and book sales. -
