Rob Pattinson Says He and Kristen Stewart Are "Good Friends"

He says she's just a friend.

Once and for all, Robert Pattinson would like enquiring minds to know that he and Kristen Stewart are platonic. For real.

In a new cover story, the Twilight actor insists to Vanity Fair that he and his onscreen paramour are simply "good friends," and that he considers her "the best young actress around."

Stewart is even more emphatic, telling the magazine, "It's so retarded . . . We're characters in this comic book."

And the naturally shy Pattinson, who was a virtual unknown before Twilight debuted a year ago, finds all the attention excruciating. "I'm trying not to drown," he tells VF writer Evgenia Peretz, who observes that his San Diego hotel room is strewn with "beer bottles, old scrambled eggs, a half-eaten Twix bar, and a dirty pair of jeans."

"I guess I'm not the type of guy cut out to do a franchise," the 23 year-old actor says, noting his aversion to crowds and his particular fear of paparazzi snapping him with his "a** crack showing." He scoffs at suggestions that he's anything to look at, too, calling himself "a cartoon character."

Yet Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke clarifies that her new star wasn't shy during the filmmaking process. At night, she recalls the young actor as "always drunk" and frequently regaling castmates with his guitar-playing.

Of the Stewart-Pattinson dynamic, Hardwicke says "What Rob and Kristen had is a multitude of feelings for each other . . . Complex, intense fascination."

The issue hits newsstands Wed. Nov. 4; the sequel The Twilight Saga: New Moon hits theaters Nov. 20.

    Robert Pattinson is AH-mazing. Loved his work ever since he was Cedric Diggory. And he did an absolutely incredible performance in The Haunted Airman! Oh and 'Bad Mother's Handbook' I think it was called. Haha. So funny. He's a fantastic actor. I bet all Edward fans are like rejoicing over the fact that he's not dating Kristen. Can't wait for New Moon.

    This is old information that Rob has said in the past. Back when he was filming in New York. I don't know why they are printing it again 4 plus months later. He was in San Diego when they where at Comic Con.... I only believe it when I can see it coming from his own mouth in a live interview.

    I am sooo loving this vanity fair cover, as Rob is just way to gorgeous and hot looking..."cartoon character" my eye! He is so drop-dead gorgeous it hurts! I agree that if I had the pap problems I would also pound down a few beers, as I would need something to help numb the constant annoyance of the constant cameras. Just keep smiling Rob, as your true fans will love you!

    You guys are all dumb! who friggen cares! They are just people.. regular ol people. Their job just happens to be acting. Movie goers have this fascination with actors. why is that? why doesn't society have a fascination with dentists or podiatrists or waiters or garbage men (and women). Get over it and get a hobby!

    OMG! I love the cover of this "Vanity Fair" issue...Rob is so drop-dead gorgeous that is hurts-"cartoon character" my eye. FYI Rob does not have a drinking problem. Living his crazy life I would have a drink to numb the annoyance of all those clicking cameras by the fans and stalkerazzi!

    I think if any young person at his age and with all the pap problems-I would have a few beers too! and who's to say they are all his-if you think about it ,this is like any AVERAGE college student,cut him some slack and there was never any truth to the "hook-up" they are just going through the same crap and don't want to be photographed nor have to always smile and dress GQ like the rest of the cast.
