Katy Perry's Sesame Street Segment Cut Over Her Cleavage

Sunny days on Sesame Street?

Katy Perry's appearance on the long-running PBS children's show has been pulled after parents complained about the singer's cleavage-baring dress.

PHOTOS: Katy's wackiest looks

A clip leaked on the web this week (nearly a million people have viewed it on YouTube), showing Perry, 25, in a low-cut dress and veil, performing a kid-friendly version of her hit "Hot N Cold" with Elmo.

It was set to air later this year as part of the show's 41st season.

TMZ reports that parents quickly fired off angry letters, demanding it not to be broadcast. "They're gonna have to rename it cleavage avenue," complained one.

Some defended the clip. One commenter wrote: "If your kid is saying things like: boobs!..it’s because of the family not because of Katy! I mean the family is the one who educate the kids! No one else is responsible of that!"

But a Sesame Street spokesperson issued a statement to UsMagazine.com early Thursday morning, deciding to side with the angry viewers:

"Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."

Perry - now engaged to comedian Russell Brand - has yet to weigh in.

On Thursday morning, she simply Tweeted, "I can totally tell you how to get to Sesame Street! I've been, Elmo & I hang out."

Have you seen the outtakes for the Katy Perry/Sesame Street episode? She was getting dirty with Elmo for sure! Search up ScreenTeamShow on youtube. They have the video up

Were all of the crew and "big wigs" at Sesame Street blind? Did they not see what she was wearing? They apparently thought it was OK at the time. Give me a break! Most kids wouldn't even pay any attention to her clevage.

I agree with Julie Butler. Can we let Sesame Street stay for the kids? Why do we have to bring MTV to the children. Apparently Ms. Perry wore a covered up shirt on SLN the other night, why could she not wear the same on a children's show? If I go out with friends I may wear something a little more low cut than what I'd wear to the PTA meeting, it's just common sense.

My only complaint is that she didn't have to the wear the breast-bearing dress she ALWAYS wears!! Do you think Sesame Street made her wear this? She's nearly nude on her single cover art--OK by me!! She wears revealing stuff in her videos and at appearances--OK by me!! My point is that whether your kid sees this and more in the street all the time, doesn't mean that Sesame Street should not have standards. They could have avoided this hoopla if they asked her to change the outfit she chose before they shot. She should know better that some occasions call for just a LITTLE more modesty. Also the fact that she had a SHEER netting doesn't mean she's covered up. That was just to keep her breasts from falling out of the low cut cups, while still being able to view them.

Yawn. I am glad I don't feel like I need to keep up with "water cooler" conversations any longer. Simon Cowell was the only redeeming aspect of that show. By the way I found a website that give you prizes for your opinions here is the topic about American Idol: opinion.ezwingame.kom/topics/is-steven-tyler-jennifer-lopez-good-for-american-idol

Compared to MOST of what's out there, Sesame Street is and always will be a GREAT kid's show. My 3 year old son loves "Coraline".. and Katy Perry's got nothing on those HUGE BOOBS that old lady has in the movie...!

meh... i never liked or watched sesame street as a kid and my older ones are to old for the show my four year old is into nick jr anyway. if sesame is making big mistakes like this maybe it's time to retire the show??

Katy should know better to go a children program like that. How dear the network allow this, The rating are not going too up they have gone down for her have nude body appearance on a child program corruption is everywhere do she have to corrupt our little children. Please let our children be children. I will not allow my grandchildren to watch Sesame Street any more if the network allow this kind of behavior to be shown on a Children program. I do monitor everything my grandchild watches on television.

  • September 24, 2010 - 1:36am Rochelle Jones

I blame the network. Sesame Street have been in home for many years, now my grandchild watch this program. If the network wants to exploit this kind of behavior my grandchild will not watch Sesame Street anymore. I do agree with other parent Sesame Street is for children. I believe some people just have turn good things too bad.

It's Sesame Street. She ought to know better than that. It's not about anyone being jealous you twits. It's about dressing appropriately for the situation. It's not just a little cleavage, it's half of each boob showing. That dress is fine for happy hour but it's not fine for most work places and it's certainly not fine for performing on a children's show like Sesame Street.

  • September 23, 2010 - 11:33pm Elizabeth Ostinett

Honestly, I don't think a preschooler would be asking about boobs. Really, I think this is about overly jealous moms because she's got something they don't. If you pay close attention, there's a mesh attachment at the top of the shirt so there's no possible exposure. Morons....

  • September 23, 2010 - 10:49pm Shaneka Anderson

If I have kids I do not see the problem . all the kid would see a good song and Elmo have fun. Are u try the time to see the boobs ?

  • September 23, 2010 - 10:16pm Shauna' Brewington

Hats off to whomever made that description. let's not tarnish the innocense of this great loved and respected learning tool. its all about the kids, not how sexy or revealing u gotta be. thanks again for using common descent sense:)

  • September 23, 2010 - 9:36pm Palmer Rubin

We know exactly why this happened: Katy Perry didn't do anything offensive, all the moms are just jealous of what she's got down there. But seriously, this is a little bit too much. All the moms need to shut up. Now, if Justin Bieber was on Sesame Street (which he probably will soon at this rate) THEN we'd have a major problem.

  • September 23, 2010 - 7:45pm Stephanie Ann Fermazi

I thought the skirt length was appropriate. And the boobs may have a little been too much, but it was the show's fault for allowing her (or making her) wear it. They could have anticipated such a response after years in the business and gave her something pretty but reasonable to wear for a children's show. IMO, they did it in purpose and let a clip "leak" on the net to create publicity.

  • September 23, 2010 - 7:02pm Jaime Gutierrez

seriously people are to freaking senseitive, now of days. there nothing wrong with the video. parents just need something to complain about. parents now of days are to quick to complain about micky mouse stuff.

  • September 23, 2010 - 6:35pm Dan Mitchell

Seriously, what are these parents with too much time on their hands problem? If the kids are young enough to be watching Seaseme Street in the first place, cleavage should be a non-issue at their young age. For that matter, they might as well lock the children up to make sure they never get exposed to anything as shocking as the cleavage that they're as likely to see on a trip to the supermarket. God forbid they ever see someone in a bathing suit... :O

  • September 23, 2010 - 6:31pm Michelle Newberry

What exec got the hard on and made the song with Elmo sexual? I thought it was cute and would have no problem letting my 2 year old watch it.
