Breaking News: Nicole Richie Welcomes Baby Boy!

Wednesday – September 09, 2009 – 2:28pm

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have welcomed their second child, a boy.

"In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden," she announced on her website Wednesday. "He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow [their 19-month-old daughter] and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes."

Look back at Nicole Richie's bump days

In February, Madden, 31, took to his band's blog to announce that he and his girlfriend, 27, were expecting again. "What's better than winning an Oscar?" he wrote. "I am so happy to tell everyone that Harlow is going to be a big sister!"

As their family expands, the two — together since 2006 — have no immediate plans to wed.

"I think for both of us, we are going to do it because we want to, not because that's what you do," Richie told CNN's Larry King last May. "We're going to do it when the time's right."

Added Madden, "We're really focused on our family, and we feel like — we already feel kind of married, you know? Our family system that we have down, we feel like this is a real family and marriage, one day it will come."

Richie's father Lionel also wants them "to take their time."

He told King he knows people who have wed spontaneously "and they broke up five minutes later. I like the idea of 'take your time, get it right,' because you have kids in common.

"I'm more interested in whether they like each other and whether they're best friends," he went on. "Because that means they'll be great parents forever."

In 2008, Richie and Madden launched the Richie-Madden Foundation, a charity that supports families and children in need.

I wish these religious and pro-marriage nut jobs would step into reality. What does marriage have to do with commitment? I know several people who have gotten married yet the night before their marriage they cheated. How's THAT for commitment. I mean you folks seriously need to pull your heads out of your asses and get real. So long as they love and care for eachother and respect eachother and value each other why is that NOT enough? Oh no i forgot you need a PIECE of freakin paper for that right? Well my parents had that piece of paper and that really held our family together.palease. I say congrads to the new parents and if being UNMARRIED works for you then by all means more power to ya!

Wow, Lionel Richie's statement was a bit strange "I'm more interested in whether they like each other and whether they're best friends." Dang, your daughter just had 2 kids out of wedlock and you're concerned whether the relationship will last? Morals are at an all-time low!

Anonymous at 5:32 p.m. on September 9, 2009 No. I'm not obsessive. I just read over my comment and it does sound like it though! I was just so hyper because of the Sparrow news. And as for saying nobody better talk bad about him, I meant it. I wasn't hyper. I just know when his picture comes out, a lot of people will ruin the mood and say, "EEEEWWW, he actually looks like a Sparrow! Ugh, he's fat! Eeek, I'm glad he's not my kid." And that just makes me sad! A baby is supposed to bring joyous moods.

On the name, it's not your kid, so why do you care? Enjoy the story and move on. Chances are you will never meet Nicole or Joel and they wouldn't want to meet you anyway, so as I said, why do you care? It's entertainment and I have heard much worse names from "everyday" people, how about ESPN, Metallica, etc and those were on the social security lists and regular, everyday people named their children that. On marriage, in NO religious document does it state that "marriage" is defined as a piece of paper that you have to apply for and then is given to you by the government. Marriage is simply a statement or actions that show commitment, and they have done that through their behavior, having children, and just plain being together. We do not know if they have had a religious ceremony or simply their own personal thoughts to each other. Marriage is NOT a document from the government. The document only gives certain rights to property and money, as well as government benefits like social security and taxes. Marriage (as defined by the government) is fictional. I am married, but only because the military forced us to in order to provide for our children, otherwise we would be in happy, nongovernmental, unwedded bliss. And it is wrong to call any child a "bastard." This word belongs right with racial slurs and slurs against women, those with disabilities and homosexuals. Get it out of your vocabulary now. Family is not a matter of government documents and what others think is "moral" but is personal, loving, and a partnership among a small group of people.

Katie @7:51 - Yes, it is good to hear about a real celebrity, rather than some reality show performer, wait, nevermind, that's exactly what Nicole is. Why is she famous, anyway? She's the kid Lionel adopted when her real parents didn't want to keep her and she got famous for acting like a stupid skank with Paris Hilton on reality tv, then had a drug problem and a DUI. I guess she's a real celebrity then.
  • September 09, 2009 - 9:06pm MaryBeth Says:

I won't consider them a real family until they commit to each other. If you are unsure if you want to commit to someone in marriage, why the heck are you having a kid together, let alone 2. A kid is at least 18 years of commitment, and if you aren't sure that you want to marry someone and be together for the rest of your lives why the heLL are you having kids together?

How about taking the time to make a true commitment and get married first before popping out your kids. It's sad how Hollywood has completely and utterly destroyed the sacred constitution of marriage and family. And for everyone who wants to disagree with that, fine, but time will only prove what sad, sad decay our society is declining into
  • September 09, 2009 - 6:11pm Lori Says:

"That is worse than what some black people name their kids!" OK, that was uncalled for.
