Oscars

Network: ABC

The Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, are held each year to celebrate artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The first Oscars ceremony was held in 1929. Winners were previously announced to the media before the trophies were handed out. Following a press leak in 1940, the Academy began to use sealed envelopes during the presentation with the names of the winners inside.

NBC televised the Academy Awards from 1953 to 1976 when ABC took over. The network’s contract with the awards show runs through 2028.
