Dax Shepard Recalls Kristen Bell’s “Car Crash” of a C-Section, Is Scarred From Seeing Her “Completely Disassembled”

Dax Shepard’s account of a C-section is everything you would expect and more. During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, Jan. 15, the funnyman retold his wife Kristen Bell’s “intense” 33-hour long labor with their second daughter, Delta, which ended up in a C-section.

“It was not [easier the second time around], it was more difficult,” Shepard, 40, admitted to DeGeneres of the arrival of his now 3-week-old daughter. “Kristen, god bless her, was in labor for 33 hours. It was intense.”

After explaining that their first born daughter Lincoln’s labor was only 15 hours long and “child’s play,” the Parenthood actor went into graphic — but hilarious — detail of his wife’s C-section.

“She got an epidural at like hour 14…and I think dads need something. I deserved something. Because I was along for the ride. Its still a car crash and I’m in the passenger seat. I’m playing Katy Perry, and I’m breathing, and I’m rubbing her back…[But] then at the last minute, which was heartbreaking, she then had to have a C-section…and I had been warned by a lot of different gentleman and even my own mother saying, ‘You might not want to watch the baby come out.’ But, what they did not warn me about was the C-section which is way worse,” he explained.

“So there’s a sheet,” he continued. “And then they go, ‘The baby’s here!’ and then you peek around the sheet, and they’re lifting out the baby, but then you notice your wife is completely disassembled — I can see inside of her. I was like, ’It’s a girl! Your liver’s out, I think. And then those are definitely your intestines…Oh my god, put her back together correctly!’”

Life-scarring moment aside, the couple then announced to the world that they had welcomed a healthy baby girl. “Delta Bell Shepard is here. She doesn’t look like either @IMKristenBell or me, but we’re gonna keep her anyway. #christmascameearly” Shepard tweeted at the time on Dec. 19.
