Just call him "Super Dad" Dean!
Tori Spelling nearly lost her life fighting for her unborn son, and now that she has taken her little boy Finn home, the actress can't help but value life's small miracles — and credits her husband six years, Dean McDermott, with keeping her family in tact while she faced the biggest medical crisis of her life.
"Dean's a super dad," Spelling, 39, gushes to Us Weekly of her man, 45, who cared for the couple's three elder children Liam, 5, Stella, 4, and Hattie, 12 months, during her hospital stay as she battled placenta previa, a dangerous condition in which the placenta covers the cervix. "He's a mom and dad all wrapped up into one."
Throughout his wife's five month medical ordeal — which included four months of bed rest, nine massive bleeds and one terrifying close call — McDermott kept a level head and, perhaps most importantly, forced his wife to stay upbeat. "I couldn't fathom losing the baby or T," explains McDermott, whose own mom died when he was 15. "I'm perpetually hopeful. T gives me a hard time about it."
Welcoming their healthy baby on August 30, Spelling tells Us McDermott was her rock while she was away receiving hospital care. "He was dealing with so much, but he was always really positive. We had date nights every Tuesday . . . Dean would spend the night at the hospital on a cot next to me and we'd talk," says the proud mom, who was forced to miss Liam's preschool graduation, Stella's fourth birthday party and even missed hearing Hattie say her first word — dada — while she was on bed rest in the hospital.
Says McDermott of his wife: "T is a warrior with a will of iron — but also the sweetest, cutest thing in the world."
