Aaron Paul Recalls Doing Shots With Michael Jackson at the Prince of Brunei's Castle
Most epic weekend ever? Long before Aaron Paul struck up a bromance with his Breaking Bad costar Bryan Cranston, he crossed paths with and befriended another A-list star. Appearing on the cover of Details magazine's February issue, the Emmy-winning actor recounts the time he found himself sitting in a castle, doing shots with the late King of Pop.
"It was the Prince of Brunei's 25th-birthday party. Six years ago, outside London," he begins. Paul was the guest of a guest at the bash, but he made a fast friend in Prince Azim when he suggested they let loose and chase sheep around the castle. "Me and the prince and princesses, Azemah and Fazilah, all put on these mud boots and chased the animals," he recalls.
At one point during the weekend festivities, the actor accidentally broke one of the prince's hovercraft vehicles. But that wasn't even the most surreal part of the whole experience.
"I was going back up to my room, and this guy grabs me and says, 'Hey, Prince Azim wants to see you in the library,'" the Need for Speed star tells Details. "So I go down there, and he's sitting on the couch with Michael Jackson, and me and Michael Jackson end up having this hour-long heart-to-heart about family and upbringings, and I remember, he just put his arm around my shoulder and said, 'You know, if you've had a rough childhood or not, it's all about forgiveness. Once you realize that, it's fine. Everything's fine.'"
"And I'm like, 'Michael, you are absolutely right,'" Paul says. "And then I go, 'Do you want to do a shot?' And he goes, 'Sure!' And I was like, 'Okay, Michael, let's do this.'"
The 34-year-old charmer is big on seizing the moment and seeking out unique experiences. Take, for example, his May 2013 wedding to wife Lauren Parsekian. In an effort to make their big day extra-special, Paul emailed their entire guest list the song "Beauty" by the Shivers and asked everyone to learn the words. Then he tracked down the band's lead singer in Brooklyn and convinced him to drive out to Malibu.
"When he got to the song and everybody else joined in, Lauren just started weeping in the most beautiful way ever," he recalls. "It's all about embracing those moments, throwing in surprises whenever you can."
