Normally it’s The Voice coaches in the giant red chairs, but on Thursday, Nov. 5, it was host Carson Daly who was put in the hot seat. The Today show co-anchor, 42, was grilled by Savannah Guthrie, Matt Lauer, and Natalie Morales about the newly confirmed romance between Voice coaches Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, which Us Weekly exclusively confirmed (via Stefani’s rep) last night.
“Come on, I’m a loyal guy!” Daly said when his co-anchors gave him a hard time for not spilling the beans sooner. “I didn’t know. I didn’t think Blake could get a girl hot as Gwen, to be honest. He’s a goofy cowboy, she’s the queen of cool. But God bless them, they’re two of the nicest people in the business. We’re thrilled that they’re finding each other. Good luck, we love you!”
And though he claimed to not officially know whether the pair were dating, Daly admitted he wasn’t surprised by their blossoming romance.
“I am not shocked after Halloween and the photos that came out,” he said, referencing the pics from Adam Levine’s party. “I was a little shocked last night to hear Gwen’s people put out an official thing because apparently she went to Nashville. She didn’t show up to the show last night, but they were, I think, going to go to some afterparties. I don’t think they ever did.”
Shelton, 39, attended the 2015 Country Music Association Awards on Nov. 4, where he walked the carpet solo for the first time in years. His ex-wife Miranda Lambert also attended, performed, and won for Female Vocalist of the Year. Shortly before the red carpet began, Stefani’s spokesperson exclusively told Us, “Gwen and Blake are longtime friends who have very recently started dating.” Shelton’s team confirmed the statement.
When Lauer commended Daly for his discretion, the TRL alum replied, “I’m a loyal friend. It’s not my story to tell, but now it’s out!”
