Much obliged, m'love! Johnny Depp expressed some sweet gratitude toward his wife, Amber Heard, as he accepted the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday, January 2.

“I also have to thank my wife Amber for putting up with me, for living with all these characters, which can’t be easy,” he said in a nod to his many colorful movie roles. “It’s hard for me — it’s got to be hard for her.”

The couple tied the knot in two ceremonies — one at home in Los Angeles, and one in a beautiful beach ceremony in the Bahamas — last February after dating for four years.

Depp, 52, and Heard, 29, initially met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009, though they didn’t officially step out together until two years later.

In a June cover story for Elle magazine, Heard explained that despite their new relationship status, both she and the Black Mass actor remain independent.

“Nothing is a dramatic change,” she said of married life. “We’ve been together for a long time now, so it’s been a fairly organic process. I have a fiercely independent spirit.”

The Magic Mike XXL star added that she did have her concerns about getting hitched before the wedding.

“The thing that really scares me is the potential of losing my freedom,” she said. “I never want for my life to lose the ability to transverse the world, with freedom and ease. The freedom and ease I have worked so hard to acquire for myself.”
