Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Visit the Zoo With His Grandparents for "Affectionate" Outing
Lions, tigers and Jelena, oh my! Justin Bieber and on-again love interest Selena Gomez visited the L.A. Zoo together Sunday, June 22, with his grandparents in tow! Their tour guide, Genie Vasels, of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, gave Us Weekly all the behind-the-scenes details from their animal kingdom outing.
"A mutual friend actually called me on Friday to say that Justin's grandparents were in town," Vasels told Us. "He wanted to do something special for them and wanted to come to the zoo."
The group, according to Vasels, marveled at "gorillas, orangutans, elephants, river otters, and a harpy eagle." The tour guide added that Bieber, 20, "loves tigers and bears" and " wanted to see elephants for sure." In order to see the majestic creatures, the quartet had to drive through the zoo.
"That's when people started going crazy," Vasels told Us of Jelena's fans. "I've never seen anything quite like it. We tour a lot of celebrities…and this was the most frenzied I had ever seen." Unfazed by Bieber's celebredom was a peacock, which was the subject of one of his Instagram posts on Sunday. "Hey u quit lookin at me like that," Bieber wrote alongside a snapshot of the bird giving him a fierce stare-down.
As for his lady's favorite moments at the zoo? "Selena loves otters," Vasels told Us of the "Come and Get It" singer, 21, "and we have these giant river otters which are amazing."
During their stop at the zoo's Rainforest of the Americas exhibit, Bieber "did a really sweet thing" for one young fan. "In front of the piranha tank, there was a little [disabled] girl in a wheelchair," recalled Vasels. "Justin walked over, put his arm around her, and asked the family to take a picture… that was his own volition. He wasn't asked to do that, he just did and it was very sweet. You should have seen the look on this little girl's face."
According to Vasels, Bieber's grandmom and grandpop "loved" their trip to the zoo and were "having a great time—asking a million questions." His grandparents seemed to be fond of Gomez, too, added Vasels. "They were all laughing, talking, and getting along great."
Meanwhile, "Justin and Selena were very affectionate with each other," the zoo guide added, though it was "not in a sloppy way!" As previously reported by Us, Jelena attended a bible study together in L.A., last Wednesday, June 18, where they were "lovey-dovey and cute," according to a source.
Vasels noted that they "seemed very respectful of each other and very relaxed" at the zoo. "They were holding hands and hugging."
