And … cut! Gilmore Girls Lauren Graham revealed during an interview with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, November 29, that the cast and crew did several takes of the jaw-dropping last four words of the Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Graham, 49, who plays Lorelai Gilmore on the beloved show, explained that she and Alexis Bledel (who plays her daughter Rory) filmed “several reactions” to Rory’s news that she’s pregnant.

In the scene, Rory and Lorelai sit on the steps of the gazebo just moments after Lorelai and longtime love Luke (Scott Patterson) tied the knot. Rory turns to her mom and tells her the happy baby news, and Lorelai gasps before the scene cuts to black.

“The reaction I gave, I would say, is a 50-50 mix of surprise and total joy,” she said of the take that ultimately made the cut. Graham added that though fans might have expected a cleaner-cut ending to the Netflix revival, she is glad for the cliffhanger.

“I love the idea that even if you’re frustrated, your imagination can take over,” she said. “I was so happy with what we did, and it was just an incredible experience, but I, too, was surprised by the end.”

During a joint interview with Patterson, Bledel and Kelly Bishop (who plays Lorelai’s mother, Emily) on the Today show, Graham revealed that none of the cast knew what the final words were for much of the filming.

"I did not know the four words until halfway through filming this duration of the series, and I too was [like], 'Huh, really? Huh?' It makes sense in terms of the journey of the show, but I can understand it poses a question as well," Graham told Today’s Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday, November 29. "Someone compared it to the end of The Sopranos, where it left a little bit of a question in the air, which was similarly controversial but artistically satisfying. I don't know."

Patterson, 58, meanwhile, joked that he thought the last four words should have been delivered to Kirk (Sean Gunn), Star Hollow’s quirky townie. “The top of my list was, ‘Kirk, drop the gun,’” he said.
