Mariah Carey and her new man, James Packer, happily confirmed their engagement on Thursday, January 21, but the pair have one small hurdle to get over before they can tie the knot — they’re reportedly still married to other people.
According to TMZ, the iconic singer’s divorce from ex-husband Nick Cannon is not yet finalized, and billionaire businessman Packer is still technically bound to ex-wife Erica Packer. (The Australian singer and model has moved on from their 2013 split and is reportedly dating Seal.)
Cannon, 35, filed for divorce from Carey in December 2014 after six years of marriage, but the paperwork has yet to be finalized, the site reports.
The America’s Got Talent host first confirmed that the pair were living apart back in August 2014, telling The Insider With Yahoo that they had been residing in separate houses “for a few months.”
Then, two months later, he sat down on the Meredith Vieira Show to reveal that a divorce was looming, though they were staying civil for their two children, twins Moroccan and Monroe, 4.
“It’s truly just staying focused on family and what’s right and getting through these times and just doing what’s right for the kids,” he said at the time. “We’ve always been people who are kinda on the go, coming and going, so their life hasn’t changed one bit. We spend holidays together, we do everything that we’re supposed to do together.”
Cannon offered his soon-to-be ex-wife congratulations on her engagement in a funny Instagram post in the early hours of Saturday, January 23, joking about her gigantic 35-carat diamond engagement ring.
