Sorry, One Direction fans: Zayn Malik is officially off the market! The 20-year-old British singer is engaged to girlfriend Perrie Edwards after popping the question on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Rumors swirled after the Little Mix singer, 20, stepped out on the red carpet of the world premiere of One Direction: This Is Us in London on Tuesday, Aug. 20, wearing a diamond engagement ring. The next day, Edwards' mother Debbie Duffy confirmed the couple's engagement in an interview with Real Radio North East's Gary and Lisa Show. (Malik's rep confirms to Us Weekly, "Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private.")
"It's true. They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely and, you know, I feel . . . it's wonderful because Zayn's absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces and it's just perfect!" she gushed. "They just get on so well together and they understand each other so it's just fabulous!"
Edwards proudly flaunted her diamond engagement ring on the red carpet Tuesday while posing with bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall. The future Mrs. Malik posed with her left hand on her hip while wearing a stunning black gown. The ring appeared to feature three diamonds on a platinum band. A source tells Us, "Everyone is so happy for them."
Duffy marveled that Mailk was a gentleman, and asked for her permission before proposing. "He did the traditional asking me and then asking his mum and dad and everything," she shared, "and it was fabulous, just lovely."
"I was like a little emotional and, like, ahhhhhh, it was so lovely," Duffy added of Malik's request. "And I just thought it was adorable."
Fellow pop singers Edwards and Malik had a brief fling in December 2011 after meeting on the set of the UK's X Factor, but officially began dating in April 2012. They began living together back in February 2013, and Duffy hinted that she wasn't thrilled by that. "I did say to Perrie, 'How long is this going to be?'" she recalled when they moved in together. "She said, 'I don't want a long relationship but I don't want it too quick, either.'"
Duffy suspects that her daughter and future husband won't set a wedding date right away due to their busy schedules. "I mean obviously they've got so much to do. They'll wait 'til 2014, 2015," Edwards' mother explained. "One Direction are doing so much and Little Mix are the same, they're out of the country most the time doing their promotion for this, that and the other, so it's just unbelievable. But I think they will eventually get together and set the date and I'm sure you'll be the first to know."
