Anna Wintour Rates Met Gala Fashion, Refuses to Attend Afterparties

Anna Wintour on Seth Myers

Straight from the expert herself! Anna Wintour stopped by Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday, May 6, and took a chance to critique some of the outfits from Monday’s Met Gala.

Huge stars including Beyonce and Jay Z, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry hit New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2015 China: Through the Looking Glass-themed affair. Wintour, 65, who rocked a Chanel Couture patterned gown with floral accents to the fashionable event, had a lot to say to Seth Meyers about other celebs’ getups.

She first eyed Anne Hathaway, who turned heads in a hooded gold Ralph Lauren Collection number. “I thought she looked amazing,” Wintour said of the 32-year-old actress, who once famously played a character inspired by the editor’s assistant in The Devil Wears Prada. “I have to admit I was slightly confused by the China reference, but I did my research and I found out that Anne and Ralph Lauren had actually based this dress on a modern Chinese artist, whose work features hip-hop artists and people wearing hoodies. So there you go, it’s brilliant!”

Wintour had similar words of praise for Justin Bieber, who walked the red carpet outside the art museum in a custom Balmain blazer paired with an asymmetrical button-down shirt, a black cummerbund, and black trousers. While Meyers found the outfit and Bieber himself a bit funny, Wintour was impressed.

“Now come on, Seth,” she began, looking at a photo of the 21-year-old singer. “This was actually one of my favorites. These are all Chinese dragons and apparently that’s aged gold bullion thread… as it should be.”

Rihanna had one of the most talked-about looks of the evening, stealing the show in a bright-colored dress with an oversized train. “I really want to tell you about this dress,” Wintour told Meyers of the gown. “Rihanna is such a star. She surfed the Internet looking for this and this was designed by a famous, famous Chinese designer Guo Pei. It apparently took one Chinese person two years to make this dress. It’s a dress not to forget.”

Wintour went on to touch on other stars, explaining that George Clooney could’ve worn whatever he wanted to the Met Gala because “he has Amal on his arm and he’s George Clooney — he doesn’t have to wear anything.” The Vogue Editor-in-Chief found herself cozying up to Clooney at the Met, seated between the Oscar winner and Bradley Cooper

Meyers addressed Wintour’s dashing seat neighbors in their interview, asking whether she picked the seating arrangement. “I have a little influence,” the fashion icon admitted. “Well, there have to be some perks! Usually I spend a lot of time walking around the tables saying hello to everybody — you may have noticed, this time I did not leave my seat.”

When she finally did get up, Wintour did not head out for drinks and debauchery at the many post-event parties.

“I don’t go to the afterparties,” she revealed. “I think people always feel if I go to the afterparties, they have to behave well, which, after all, is not the point of an afterparty. So, Rihanna and Lady Gaga were the hosts of the afterparties. I retire with George Clooney.”
