Remember when George Clooney sported a curly mullet? We blocked that memory out too. But this week’s New York Magazine relives that defining hairstyle on its January 11 cover.

For its “Beginnings” issue, Clooney reminisces about the days before his salt and pepper hair, marriage to Amal Alamuddin, or breakout role in ER. “It’s always bad to say you did a play in Los Angeles, because people just look at you and laugh. But I did it,” Clooney told the mag about his role as a male prostitute drug-addict in the L.A. play Vicious — about Sex Pistols’ front man Sid Vicous — that ultimately got him an agent.

“I look back at that play as the turning point for me. That was the first time I really felt like, ‘Okay, I’m in the right business. I shouldn’t be embarrassed about everything I do,'” Clooney told the mag.

Or about rocking a mullet either. Despite the potentially ill-advised, yet on-trend hair choice, Clooney was an obvious heart-throb from the very beginning — just look at him in that plaid flannel shirt.

“Loved him then, love him now :)” one fan commented on New York Mag‘s Instagram when the cover was released on social media on Tuesday, January 12. Another noted that the younger version of the Ocean’s 11 actor is a dead-ringer for Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live host, Andy Cohen. One more wrote, “OMG! Those curls, but always a cutie ;)” The common theme: Most admitted they find him attractive no matter what age he is.

What do you think of George’s retro looks?
