Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton’s Nashville Denim — More in Common With Kate Middleton Than You Think!

Country strong—and fabulous!

While there’s plenty to love about Nashville’s Rayna (Connie Britton) and Juliette’s (Hayden Panettiere) sequin-dripping stage costumes, it’s impossible to deny that the ladies’ casual clothes—namely, their jeans, always tailored to a T—are insanely chic, too.

The country series’  stars have one woman to thank for the baby blues that help them flaunt their assets: Nashville’s costume designer, Susie DeSanto.

“We are probably single-handedly keeping J Brand in business!” DeSanto told Us Weekly, reporting in from the Nashville-based set between fittings. “We have lots of their denim, but we also have a lot of their leather pieces, too.”

In addition to J Brand, the label Kate Middleton so often turns to for outdoors events, DeSanto, who has an upcoming accessories collaboration with Stella & Dot, also shops Frame and Stella McCartney for Britton’s character’s closet (“they look so beautiful on her”), while she frequents Current/Elliot and Rag & Bone for both the redheaded beauty and petite Panettiere.

“It’s kind of crazy, actually. I walk into their closet, and I’m like, ‘Who has this many pairs of pants? Or leather jackets? No more leather jackets!” she laughed, but admitted that that verdict does not last for long. “Of course we find another one and we buy it.”

Still, thanks to a visit to Rascal Flatts bassist Jay DeMarcus’ Tennessee home, shared with his wife Allison Alderson, DeSanto never beats herself up too much for her oversized costume budget.

“When [DeMarcus and Alderson] were on our show, I went to their house to help pick out clothes for the episode, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay!’ There were 700 leather jackets in different colors and blouses, and everything. It looked like Rayna James’ closet,” the couturier gushed to Us.

Does that make Alderson her latest country muse? Not so fast. “If I could get into Faith Hill’s closet, then we’d really have something to talk about!” DeSanto quipped.

And yet, while the costumes are undeniably fun, it’s the collaboration with the actors that DeSanto loves most. “Once the actors get into the fitting room and get the clothes on, they know who their characters are, how to talk and how to walk,” DeSanto, who’s also worked on Miss Congeniality and 13 Going on 30, explained.

“Personal taste has something with it,” the designer continued. “I just don’t think it’s a good idea to have someone wear something they don’t feel comfortable in—especially when they have to be onstage! You want to give them the confidence to rock it.”
