Name: Nikki M. James
Occupation: Actress; singer
Clothing Confidence: The Tony Award-winning star of Broadway's Book of Mormon, 31, says her get-dressed philosophy is simple: "I'm in whatever makes me feel like my best self that day." The pieces she always reaches for? "J Brand skinny jeans, a great white V-neck t-shirt, and a fitted black tank," says James, who was born in Summit, New Jersey. "Any of these basics can be paired with almost anything in my closet at anytime for a polished, pulled-together and timeless look."
Charge Ahead: "I love to shop. I'm an impulse buyer and I hate the fitting room so unfortunately I often have to make trips for some returns," says James, whose favorite designers include Thakoon, DVF, Marchesa, Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim, Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta. Her go-to destinations: Bloomingdale's, Barney's New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Urban Outfitters and Zara. James also loves to splurge at Opening Ceremony, where, she says, "I always feel totally on trend without going overboard."
Stylish Steps: "I love high heels: boots, platforms, pumps, you name it. In this city, where we walk a lot, towering on my stilts can sometimes pose a challenge. I suffer for my extra inches and I also pack flats when necessary," says James, who admires Zoe Saldana's "classic" style. Two recent buys: "A towering pair of platform sandals on sale at Shoegasm, and socks from H&M."
Quote: "I love the way New Yorkers dress to be seen. We move amongst each other so much more than people in other cities, on the subways and on the streets. Even our winter coats are stylish."
