"We Are the World" to Be Re-Recorded for Haiti

Thursday – January 28, 2010 – 8:47am

The music world hasn't forgotten about the ongoing crisis in Haiti.

In fact, following last week's all-star telethon, another all-star collaboration has been confirmed: a remake of the classic charity single "We Are the World."

See Hollywood's most generous celebs!

Producer Quincy Jones confirmed to E! News that the single will be re-recorded in Los Angeles on Monday, with proceeds going to Haiti relief.

"It's the 25th anniversary and it's perfect timing," Jones said. "It's not an accident, man. That's God. It will be 'We Are the World' for Haiti."

Find out how the Hope for Haiti Now telethon shattered records

The original single -- with Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen and scores of other superstars -- raised money for famine relief in Africa back in 1985.

Jones wouldn't name this year's lineup, but E! claims that singers may include Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, Sheryl Crow and others.

Director Paul Haggis may film the recording session, a source tells E!

WITHOUT MICHAEL JACKSON'S VOICE, THE RECORDING WILL BE HOLLOW. Quite frankly, it's insulting that they've excluded the man who wrote the song (Lionel was a contributor at best). Michael was the draw then and now. Quincy and Lionel should be ashamed of themselves for not including Michael's voice - it's his song! Apparently, Jermaine is singing Michael's part. What a joke. I don't mean to be disrespectful to Jermaine but he is NO Michael - no one is - that's the point. He's simply irreplaceable. Quincy, add Michael back into the recording where he belongs. If not, not only will I not be buying it, I won't even listen to it or support anything else you or Lionel ever do.

If MICHAEL JACKSON'S VOCALS ARE NOT INCLUDED, im NOT INTERESTED, sorry, but this whole thing was an idea Michael had, his vocals should remain, which are very few, otherwise, sorry, i will help in other ways =)

how much money are we going to give to Haiti? They raised 57 million in that telethon alone. They raised millions with the text to donate thing. Are we gonna stay there and see that this money is used to rebuild and help people? The earthquake did not affect all of the island of Haiti. There are people in our own countries starving and homeless every single day and yet it's hard for us to help these people out. How come they didn't do something like this for the Hurricane Katrina victims? It's sad that we are still rebuilding from the hurricane after 5yrs but are donating huge amounts of money to another country to help an event that happened there. How much money have other countries donated too? Haiti should be rolling in money to help everyone affected by the earthquake and those not affected

Lets all remember the reason why Michael did this in the first place! He did this to help people and to make the world a better place and as a citizen of the USA we have not made any attempt to do that. Michael donated all the earnings from that song to help other people with no question asked. Now that is a true American! So stop pointing the blame ask have you have someone today! just like the song Man in the Mirror "take a look at yourself and make the change" it's starts with all of us! Good job Quincy MJ would of loved the Idea!

I think it's a GREAT idea as long as Michael Jackson's voice is added to the recording and Lionel Richie is also involved. If not? Write a NEW song because "We Are the World" was MJ and LR's baby and they MUST be included.

I feel bad for them in Haiti, but I agree with barb and gigi. Maybe if we had "the big one" they would help the poor, starving & homeless here. Btw, Quincy does sound like a fkg idiot.

  • January 28, 2010 - 12:48pm Ask Mrs Jackson first Says:

Yeah right after Michael Jackson tribute showed his own version and how this is his song...even though their were 10 other singers their with him for the original... Give it up..we will never hear the end of it .. OH MICHAEL..BOO HOO WE MISS YOU IT IS YOUR SONG. WHEN it was for African Relief.. fundraiser.. This is not a Michael Jackson song so what he wrote and hand the gull to bring out his own version and the family played his own version by himself with black kids...Don't forget the Jacksons get a percentage of the profits too

@billy While I agree that they should come up with new material, Americans are not lazy. Land of opportunity buddy. We take advantage of that.
  • January 28, 2010 - 11:31am barb Says:

How about a remake if We are the World for the starving kids and homeless families in AMERICA
  • January 28, 2010 - 11:14am Chris C Says:

Yes, Quincy. You say "God" made this happen, and you also want to help Haiti? How about not claiming their death and famine was an act of "God"? Also, Africa still has problems. Starving people, homelessness. Why not commemorate the 25th anniversary of the cause by not selling out on them for a 'flashier' charity? You make me sick.
  • January 28, 2010 - 10:29am billy Says:

lazy americans can't come up with new material.
  • January 28, 2010 - 10:20am jay Says:

WHY????? SERIOUSLY? come up with a new song, with new words. stop this remake bullsh*t.
  • January 28, 2010 - 10:20am gigi Says:

Oh paleese! Does a tragedy always have to happen first before more people become aware and want to help.It seems that way.
  • January 28, 2010 - 9:59am Heather E Says:

"It's perfect timing"...."That's God". Yeah, God make the quakes happen so Quincy Jones can remake a song. This report makes him sound like a moron.
