"I was looking forward to the production of A Star Is Born and the opportunity to work with Clint Eastwood," the "I Was Here" singer told E! News. "For months we tried to coordinate our schedules to bring this remake to life but it was just not possible. Hopefully in the future we will get a chance to work together."

To be directed by Eastwood, the film will be the fourth "A Star Is Born," about a singing female superstar who struggles to stand by her man, a fading, alcoholic actor. Janet Gaynor starred in the 1937 original, with Garland and James Mason reprising it in 1954, and Streisand and Kris Kristofferson headlining a 1976 version.

Although names like Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Christian Bale and Johnny Depp have been mentioned, a male lead has yet to be cast in the film, which was first delayed by Beyonce's 2011-2012 pregnancy with daughter Blue Ivy.

Variety reports that Grammy-winning jazz singer Esperanza Spalding could possibly be cast as the leading woman.
