Glee’s Final Season Features Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry Returning to McKinley High to Lead the Glee Club

Lea Michele's Rachel Berry will lead the New Directions in the final season of FOX's Glee.

Will Rachel Berry be the new Mr. Schuester? That’s what it looks like according to FOX’s press release on Glee’s sixth and final season. After a failed venture as a TV actress, star Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) will return to Lima, Ohio only to discover that (gasp!) the villainous Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) has shut down the arts programs at McKinley High.

Rachel will then take charge and lead the New Directions while Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) take on “surprising new gigs” in Lima.

Ryan Murphy’s hit show took a tragic turn in July 2013, when star Cory Monteith died at the age of 31 from a “mixed drug toxicity” consisting of heroin and alcohol. The actor and his character Finn Hudson were honored in an October 2013 episode called “The Quarterback.”

Creator Murphy had originally planned to include Finn in the series’ final episode, telling Entertainment Weekly, “The ending of Glee is something I have never shared with anyone, but I always knew it. I’ve always relied on it as a source of comfort, a North Star. The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn’s glee club. 'What are you doing here?' he would ask. 'I’m home,' she would reply. Fade out. The end.”

The beloved musical comedy’s final 13 episodes will air mid-season in 2015.
