Jodie Sweetin Says Stephanie Tanner’s Return in Fuller House Is a “Dream Come True”

Jodie Sweetin Confirms Stephanie Tanner Will Return in Fuller House
Jodie Sweetin opened up to Us Weekly exclusively about Fuller House and what to expect from her character Stephanie Tanner: "It's definitely a dream come true," she says.

This House will be Fuller and sweeter! Former child star Jodie Sweetin spoke to Us Weekly exclusively about the upcoming Full House reboot, Fuller House, and shared details on what to expect from her character Stephanie Tanner.

“I am beyond thrilled!” Sweetin, 33, gushed on Thursday, May 7, at WE tv’s Ian Ziering’s “Pet Project” event to raise awareness for Canine Companions for Independence in L.A. “To say I’m excited, I don’t think is quite an adequate term for it. I’m getting to do something and have an opportunity to be a part of something I hold incredibly dear to me, with people that are my family that I’ve known since I was 5 years old. To be able to go back and do this as an adult and really bring the Stephanie character back to life and who she is as an adult, who wouldn’t be excited to be able to do that?”

The actress gave Us some details on what Stephanie Tanner has been up to since the series wrapped in 1995. “Steph has been a world traveler. She is a little bit of a free spirit,” Sweetin explained. “She’s kind of an aspiring musician, she’s been traveling all over. I think she’s gonna be really fun to play.”

The show, set to debut in 2016, will be centered — once again — on the Tanner family, this time focusing on Candace Cameron Bure‘s character D.J. Tanner, who is now a widowed mom of three. D.J.’s younger sister Stephanie and her best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) will help the eldest Tanner daughter with raising her family, just as Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier) helped Danny Tanner (Bob Saget).

“I think I’m gonna get to bring a lot of elements of myself to [Stephanie], which I did as a kid,” Sweetin reflected. “But I don’t think I really realized I was doing it. When you’re a kid that’s just who you are. I think I’m going to get to bring some really fun life into Stephanie and who she is and what she’s up to.”

News of Fuller House was confirmed last month by none other than Stamos, who is serving as the executive producer of the Netflix original series.

“It’s definitely a dream come true,” Sweetin gushed to Us on Thursday. “But it is a dream that has been in the works for quite a number of years. I think Jeff Franklin and I talked about it… God, I don’t know, 2007, 2008. We started tossing around ideas with the cast and it’s always been something we wanted to do, but [it] never quite worked out. When we took this meeting with Netflix months and months ago, and then things slowed down, we didn’t hear and said, ‘Okay, we’ll see what happens.’ Then it’s like all of a sudden, it’s going.”

Coulier, who played Joey in the series, is the latest original cast member to sign onto the reboot. Other stars include Bure, Barber, Sweetin, and Stamos. Those who haven’t yet been confirmed include Saget and Lori Loughlin, as well as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who played Michelle Tanner.

“I haven’t heard anything yet, no,” the actress told Us of the twins. “But Candace and Andrea and I are talking all the time and really excited about what we get to do!”

As for whether her two little girls, Zoie and Beatrix, have seen their mom’s beloved series? “Oh my god, yeah!” Sweetin told Us. “My kids have seen Full House. My older daughter [Zoie] loves the show. She actually has it on her little tablet and she watches episodes so it’s really funny. I’ve asked her before, like, ‘Is it weird that the kids at school know who your mommy is?’ She’s like, ‘Well, a little bit but it’s kind of cool.'”
