The massive three-hour parade, which kicks off the holiday season, starts in New York City's Upper West Side and moves downtown toward Macy's flagship store on 34th Street.

The 2016 parade will be live-streamed on Verizon's YouTube page. This is the first year that the event will be streamed online. According to Variety, Verizon set up five cameras along the route, giving viewers a 360-degree look at the parade — including performances from the casts of Broadway's Cats and Waitress, NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live! and, of course, plenty of marching bands and lots and lots of floats, from Pikachu to Paddington Bear to Hello Kitty, among many others.

The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was originally called the Macy's Christmas Parade, took place in 1924, when the department store's first-generation European immigrant employees banded together to celebrate their first Thanksgiving in America.

Since then, the event has become one of the most beloved parades of all time, drawing millions of people to the streets of the Big Apple — and millions more viewers at home — to see the ginormous helium-filled balloons. This year, the parade is introducing three new balloons: a Trolls balloon, featuring the movie's characters Poppy, Branch and Guy Diamond; a Diary of a Wimpy Kid balloon; and Trixie the Dog.

"We are thrilled to celebrate this special milestone with a spectacular lineup filled with amazing new and commemorative elements that will continue our storied legacy of unparalleled holiday entertainment."

The 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade airs on NBC Thursday, November 24, at 9 a.m. ET.
