Ricky Gervais is back!

The 50-year-old English comic will be hosting the 69th Golden Globe Awards, show announcers confirmed Wednesday.

Many assumed last year's controversial host wouldn't be back again. He slammed Robert Downey, Jr., for his past stints in jail and rehab, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for The Tourist, Charlie Sheen for his meltdown and the cast of Sex and the City for their ages. He also mercilessly targeted celeb Scientologists John Travolta and Tom Cruise.

"The ratings went up again, and the organizers asked me to consider a third year," Gervais wrote in Heat magazine this February.

At the time, the Office creator wasn't sure if he should emcee again. "I don't think I should," he wrote. "I don't know what I could do better!"

He defended his controversial barbs, too: "I did exactly what I went to do…The response was staggering…The weird thing is the question is always, 'Did Ricky go too far?' And the answer is always, 'No.' I have yet to find anyone who was actually offended by [my jokes]."

The 69th Golden Globe Awards will be held on Jan. 15, 2012.
