Ugly Betty Canceled by ABC

Wednesday – January 27, 2010 – 4:23pm

Things have gotten ugly over at ABC.

The network is canceling Ugly Betty, which stars America Ferrera, Vanessa Williams and Ana Ortiz. The hour-long show is currently in its fourth season.

"We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Stephen McPherson told UsMagazine.com in a joint statement Wednesday. "We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell."

All's not lost! See how these stars made their return to TV

The series -- about a young woman struggling as an editor at a fashion magazine -- has shifted time slots frequently over the past year. They had switched to Fridays for half a season before returning to Wednesday nights this fall.

In addition to telling producers that the show is over, the network has also trimmed the final season's episode order from 22 to 20.

There are so few shows that are light and easy to watch, it leaves you with a good feeling and wanting to see more. Please ABC bring Betty back. We love it. Pat

It's gonna be a huge mistake for ABC to cancel Ugly Betty. It's a great show and one of the only few tv series that I still watch. Much better than some new shows like couger town. How can we let ABC know that we want Ugly Betty to go on?
  • January 29, 2010 - 1:34pm Carmen Says:

Of all the shows you could cancel, Ugly Betty is NOT one of them!!!! What do we need to do to let the network know we want them to keep Ugly Betty on the air?

I cannot believe ABC are cancelling a quality show. I understand it has dropped somewhat in ratings recently but there is still a lot more to be said in the world of Ugly Betty and if they would only give it a consistent timeslot then people would be able to keep track of it and keep watching. This is a quality show that is different to everything else on tv at the moment and is just a joy to sit down and watch once a week. Please ABC, keep investing in this show.....

To all of us Ugly Betty lovers: Go to ABC's website and click on the contact ABC link. Demand to them that we LOVE Betty and want them to keep it going. Maybe if enough of us bombard them, they will change their minds!!!

This stinks. Another show of actual quality - cancelled. Lifetime...please pick this show up...perfect fit for your audience. ABC - Always Blundering Company

OMG...NO!!! I love this show sooooooo much. They cant cancel Ugly Betty :( I just hope at least for the last episode they show her w/out her braces, with like a whole new makeover. I know Betty has changed drastically since she first came on but still I would love to see her w/out braces. I also hope she ends up w/ that guy (forgot his name) thats moving.

Finally a show based on reality that not every character looks like a supermodel. In real life we are NOT all supermodels and dont have perfect bodies and coiffed hair.

I LOVE this show. I can't believe ABC is cancelling. I hope another network picks it up. I agree w/ NO!!! This show sends a GREAT message that it's OK to be different. Very sad about this ABC, get rid of The Bachelor, that show SUCKS!
  • January 28, 2010 - 10:11am Marie Says:

I am DONE with you, ABC. This was the first quality, relatable show in a LONG time. So many young women relate to Betty, a recent grad trying to succeed in her career and love in Manhattan, working in an office building, dealing with not being gorgeous like 90% of women here and commuting from Queens. Hello? You keep other shows on the air that NO ONE watches. Greys Anatomy is a nice idea but is very unrealistic. I will NEVER watch your network again.

I'm missing it already and it's not over yet, but ABC needs to quit messing with good shows. UB should never have been moved around to begin with! LOVE LOVE LOVE this show...great cast, love the soap opera like drama mixed with the comedy...made a wonderful mix and now we have to say good-bye! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

Juan: I'm sure that's not your real name. Why hide a$$hole? I guess ignorance will always be around unfortunately.

Just like NBC should not have moved Jay Leno from his award winning spot, ABC shouldn't take Ugly Betty off the air. Their problem like NBC was moving the show in the first place. These people are annoying, that's why we folks choose reality shows and cable.

Can't believe ABC cancelled this very entertaining show. WTF, you cancel good shows to put on piece of s--t shows. Should have left it on Thursdays, thee was nothing wrong with that time slot. What piece of shit show are you planning on putting on instead? UMMM, let me guess, another reality show, we need another one...IDIOTS!!!!!!
  • January 28, 2010 - 9:29am anonymous Says:

didn't even know Jessica Simpson had a show.
  • January 28, 2010 - 8:44am Carol Says:

ABC caused the demise of this funny show by moving it to TV Hell Fridays to make room for a NOT funny show that failed, then moving it again to Wednesday rather late in the evening in my opinion.
  • January 28, 2010 - 8:14am Anonymous Says:

NOOOOOOOO!! How dare they cancel my most favorite show in the world!!! If they cancel Grey's Anatomy next, that is it. I am done with ABC. I'll just watch Big Bang Theory on CBS and cable shows. No wonder the networks are hurting. They take away good shows and put on bad ones. I can't believe ABC is doing this to me!!!!!
  • January 28, 2010 - 7:40am NO!!! Says:

This is such a funny show, and it sends out a good message to kids that it's ok to be different...they need more shows like this.
