New Moon Director Fires Back at Critics

New Moon director Chris Weitz says he wasn't taken aback by critics' harsh words for the Twilight sequel (Ty Burr of The Boston Globe called the vampire flick a "mope-fest.")
"Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews," Weitz tells Entertainment Weekly. "Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied 'New Moon,' it's rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he's a genius, and I think he made something beautiful."

He says he is just relieved fans embraced the sequel, which earned $285 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

"If one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie by the fans," says Weitz. "What I've realized over the last week is I won't necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don't get it, then you don't get it."

After enduring a rigorous world press tour to promote the film, Weitz says he's "at the point of physical collapse."
But he says he'd dive in the director's chair again for Breaking Dawn, the yet-unannounced final installment.

"I'd do it for Stephenie [Meyer], Rob [Pattinson], Taylor [Lautner] and Kristen [Stewart]," says Weitz. "I feel a great deal of gratitude for those people. But I don't think I could do another press tour like we did. I just think I would die."

Twilight was ridiculously horrible, I personally hated it and could not believe all the hype over it. Robert and Kristen, in my opinion, acted horribly in it, they did not seem to be well directed. In New Moon they actually seemed to be like the characters in the book and the movie as a whole was MUCH better that Twilight. -

twilight was very dissapointing and new moon was better, but honestly this is not the best movie of this year, although fans will vote for it like crazy on awards, lets be honest the movie was great, could have done much much better, and i still keep on wondering WTF with the scene of alice's vision...what was the director thinking!!!! -

I'm a fan of the books, but the movies are just "ok". Kristen Stewart's acting in New Moon was boring. I agree with Angela's earlier comments...very monotone, she doesn't show a lot of emotion. I feel Bella has more depth than that.Everyone else in the movie was good though. -

Who gives a fat $hit what critics think, we all have minds of our own. I couldn't care less what someone else thinks of a movie, so called 'critic' or not. Everyone has their own opinion, you either like it or you don't. Critics are a waste of someones money and time. New Moon was AWESOME!!! -

Ok I am a 24 year old married mother of two. So I am NOT a teeny bopper. Having said that- after reading these books and falling in love with the whole series I was disappointed by the film adaption of Twilight. It could have been SO much better. I just saw New Moon yesterday and I LOVED it. It was a trillion times better then the first and it stuck close to the book. Kristen Stewart is still pretty monotone.. but she was a little better in this one. Everyone else rocked in this movie. This director should be proud. I hope he does Breaking Dawn! I also hope that Eclipse is as great as this one... tho I have my doubts because the director, directed 30 Days of Night and that was horrible. But I'll give it the benefit of the doubt because New Moon was so great. -

I love the fact that critics.. Review movies they do not know the plot of. IMO the critics boss should have made the critic read the series... The fans speak the truth... The books are good the movies are good... The critics are trying to pull rabbits out of their.... Now seriously.. They need to get over it -
