Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has been secretly battling hepatitis C — a serious viral infection of the blood, often associated with used needles, the New York Daily News reports.
In an Access Hollywood interview airing tomorrow night, Tyler, 58, admits that he was diagnosed three years ago but "I've had hepatitis C for a long time, asymptomatic."
"I've been pretty quiet about this," says the admitted former drug addict. "The band took a break about three years ago. … [My doctor] said now is the time, and it's 11 months of chemotherapy" — actually, interferon, which strengthens the immune system — "so I went on that, and it about killed me."
Tyler adds: "You know, it really hurt. It was a bad, bad period. I'm in AA, and I tried to go three, four, five months with nothing, and it about killed me."
As Tyler underwent interferon therapy, his marriage of 18 years to fashion designer Teresa Barrick suffered. The couple, who have two children, divorced earlier this year. "I had a little problem at home, to say the least," he says, "and I would run upstairs at night, you know, to put the kids asleep and wake up at 3 in the morning with a nosebleed — you know, just passed out from the interferon, the treatment. It's a shot and pills and all of that. But the good news is I stood the test of time."
About 4.5 million Americans suffer from hepatitis C, which can cause lead to scarring and cirrhosis of the liver.
"It's the silent killer," Tyler says. "I may go on Oprah and talk about this."
Tyler isn’t the only celebrity to suffer from hepatitis C. In 2002, Pamela Anderson announced that she had contracted the disease after sharing tattoo needles with ex-husband Tommy Lee.

Steven Tyler is a very caring person and would appear on Oprah only to know he would be helping someone with the Hep C problem he has been battling with for years now.I certainly would watch Steven Tyler on Oprah or anywhere else I can. I am totally upset to hear he was abusing drugs as I didn't know..Glad to hear he entered a Rehab for help!I AM A GREAT FAN OF STEVEN TYLER and wish him well.
YES, YES, YES! It's about time for someone in celebrity land to stand up for us. I have Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion (emergency surgery) in the 80s. I've been on the rat poison treatment 3xs and I've developed cirrhosis. I contracted it after I got sober in AA 21 years ago.
Hepatitis C is THE silent killer of the century. I found it in 2001 accidentally. I was in my senior year of college and was tired all the time, so I had a complete physical done which only showed elevated liver enzymes. Then my liver biopsy showed I had cirrhosis due to HCV.
There's a LOT of ignorance about Hep C and a LOT of health care workers are misinformed about this deadly disease, to include doctors. It's not if, but when I'll need a liver transplant. The chemo for me has failed over the 144 total weeks of interferon shots and rat poison antiviral treatment that I've taken since 2001.
It's about time that someone took a stand for us that have this deadly disease. We're out here fighting and suffering silently - no one cares. I'm 51 years old, college educated, and I'm in for the fight of my life. With a little bit of help, I'm sure I could fight a good fight.

Dear Steven,
I hope you are well regarding your battle with Hepatitis C. My sister just found out that the Hepatitis C that she was exposed to 20 years ago has done a considerable amount of damage to her liver and now has to undergo treatments. I know there are so many advancements in medicine as of late and I'm hoping she'll come through this alright, however the doctors tell her she may need a liver transplant. At the time she was diagnosed 20 years ago, there wasn't enough information about it. All the doctors told my sister was that she had the antibodies to fight it off. It really wasn't taken seriously enough back then. I believe Leslie contracted hepatitis C through her job as a therapy aid working in a developmental center. Anyone can get it if you work in especially the health profession and have a cut on your hand or whatever and aren't careful with what you may be handling on the job. Hepatitis C is so prevalent in the world today that it's reached epidemic proportions. So, you're not alone in this Steven. There are great improvements though with new medicines for it that really works, but in Leslie's case her liver is quite diseased as a result of Hep. C. We aren't sure how well she will do with treatments and can only hope it will slow down the effects it's had on her liver and over all health.
I know my sister Leslie would be grateful if you said a few supportive words to her. Getting this kind of news about her liver is a real downer; however Leslie seems to be taking it all in stride. She's been a real trooper through it all. Leslie happens to be a real fan of yours and just loves your music as we all do. You are a fabulous talented man. We all wish you the very best of wellness and success.

I have been cured from the disease. I was on treatment for a long 3 years, because I had a low white blood count they kept me on a maintenance program. They decided to up my meds despite the blood count and it worked! I have been disease free for over 6 years. I think everyone should be tested for Hep C as an adult. Most people get checked for HIV. I think it should be the responsiblility of the doctors to prescribe this.
I wrote awhile back, my boyfriend just reached his halfway mark with the treatment & they say it is working, but that he has 24 more weeks to go...and he went on anti-depressants and is MUCH happier. My hope is for a cure for him & all of you and remember, your mental outlook makes a big difference, get all the help available, don't give up.
I really think the world needs to know how much of a killer disease Hep C is and how prevalent it is becoming in our society. My husband has just finished treatment for Hep C Genotype IA. Apparently he has had it for over 30 years. His treatment was 48 weeks. He had to cutback his Ribivarin to 5 pills a day at about 44 weeks because his hemaglobin was so low. The treatment was very difficult physically and emotionally. He is still experiencing all the same side effects as pre treatment. He just had his post treatment viral bloodtest and we will get the results in the middle of February. The big one will be the 6 months test. The specialists say if he is clear then he will be considered cured.
I would watch Steven Tyler on any talk show regarding Hep C!
I also have Hep C and I am a non responder. The treatment for me was worse than chemo. The expense for treatment is very HIGH. The fatigue, hair loss, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, anemia, depression, tired but can't sleep, insomnia, irritability, muscle aches, taste changes, low blood sugar, stress, anger, shortness of breath, chest pains, jaundice, weakness, coughing, fever, chills, flu like symptoms, headaches, impaired concentration, liver pain, injection site reaction, hyperthyroidism, my thyroid is still not working right. This is just a taste of what treatment does to you. Not to mention what it does to your loved ones and family.
I am very angry after going through all of this and it did not work. I am very concerned for my future, how long do I have left to live? It doesn't matter how you get this disease. I got it thru a blood transfusion in 1980. So I have had this disease for 28 years. I have been a sub human for the past two years unable to get out of bed. Any kind of attention that this disease gets is better than what it get now .... nothing.
I would love to see Steven do the Oprah show, or any show on this subject. My boyfriend started treatment 12 weeks ago and was just told its working, so he has 32 more weeks to go. But, the depression has caused him to stop seeing me & his family entirely. Its heartbreaking and he won't go on anti-depressants. Anyone else dealing with this?
Hello my name ic cytnhia and i have been a iv user for three years but in a addiction for 10 i went to detox 2 times and didn't work and got heavier into it i was in crime to feed it this was no life for me the second time i went to detox is when i foujnd out i had Hepatitis C i thought my life was over but i knew that i had to stop drinkning andf using i went to jail and thought hey i can'y do this to myseel i have a 4 yrs old daughter waiting for me and she needs me in her life so i came to a promgram that is about 6-9 monthas long and it is sloly changing my life and iam starting to understand that thisa liver disease but got to go now everyone out there you know you can live and move on from it and just take care xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
I HAVE ALREADY MAILED OPRAH ON THIS SUBJECT. THE US NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF HEP C AND HOW IT IS KILLING SO MANY. TODAY I AM GOING ON MY 8TH WEEK OF TREATMENTS. ITS A LIVING HELL, BUT IT IS LIVING!!!! A LOT OF THE POPULATION CAN'T TAKE OFF 11 MONTHS AS MR TYLER DID. WE ARE SINGLE BABY BOOMERS WHO ARE LOOSING EVERYTHING WE WORKED FOR. PLEASE, THE EDUCATION TO EVERYONE IS SO IMPORTANT.
i was shocked to hear that he has hep c...i myself have been diagnosed with it since 2003 and it's a never ending battle!!he isn't lieing when he says it about kills you!i spent over 6 months at the cleveland clinic due to the side effects of the interferon and the ribavarin that you have to take for the treatments!after 5 weeks the dr's determined that i am a non-responder to the meds and now we are in limbo trying to decide what to do and where to go....i am very sick from it dealing with sever fatigue everyday!i was hoping to get a site to email him and others with this god awful disease to see how they are doing....my email is tigg19692007@yahoo.com please feel free to email if anyone has this or if someone has an email addy to send steve an email....thanks!
I would watch. Although Oprah is not the only talk show out there. I realize he is busy but if he truly wants to make a difference he & others like him should go on Larry King, 60 Minutes, etc. (as many shows as possible). Until the shame is eliminated from this disease there will never be a cure! I developed HCV from a needle stick while working as an RN at a Veterans Hospital & am now dying from liver cancer. I get so angry when people focus on how other contracted HCV. Someone that got it from a blood transfusion is no better off than someone who got it from sharing needles. Nobody ASKS for this or wants it! I am no different than the addict. Futhermore, you never see this disease discussed on any major shows because of the stigma. My own mother tells me to not let people know that I have Hepatitis & to just say I have caner. Sad but True!
I just watched a show on the E channel about Steven and Liv Tyler. I was shocked when I heard them mention Hep C and chemo treatments. I wish I had known more about Hep C. My husband passed away on April 6, 2006 from liver cancer (at the age of 54) - just 28 days after being diagnosed. I (we) didn't even know he had Hep C until they did blood work after a CAT scan was performed because his liver felt enlarged. Just a year before his liver enzymes were elevated but the doctor never mentioned how important it was to follow up on this nor did they test anything else at that time. I have so many questions. I can't imagine how poorly he felt for a long time and he never really said much of anything. I wish we would have been better informed. If so, he might still be with me today. I miss him terribly. We never got a chance to have our time. We were supposed to grow old together.
Steven:
This is my third try with treatment. It is was it is and I am ok dude.
What I am asking of you kind sir is to please go oh Ophrah hell bring me along lets tell the world about this stuff and how there needs to be no stigma or shame. I have been with you since I was a young thing and now that I am not so young lets get the world by the damn balls and tell the world (with the help of the media) hep c comes in all kinds of experiences - I know you know what I'm talking about.
I realize who you are and it make no difference to me I would just be so blessed and pleased to be able to go public along side of you for the millions who suffer.
Hope you can get time to email me Steven hell that's the least you owe for raising me up with the the right rock in roll. God Bless to your kids and wife.
North Idaho Is very alright this time of year. Check it out.
Truly Hell we must be the same age.
Yes, I would watch Steven Tyler on Oprah!!
I too have Hep. C and was diagnosed 3 years ago.
I have started treatment and is has been a hard thing to swallow. Three months into treatment my new doctor wants to stop treatment. He says my genotype maybe non-responsive to the treatment. He is running my first Viral Load to see if treatment is responsive. If so we will continue the full 12 months, if non-responsive we will discontinue treatment all together. He will just run blood work annually until he feels it necessary to start treatment again.
You not only feel like total sh?? daily. You have to work, keep face so that the treatment doesn't take over but NO SLEEP is terrible. How can you feel better if you are always tired. I am on my third sleeping pill and they are just not working. My skin, terrible! My moods, su?? Crying spurts and feeling like a disease!!!
My partner, tries to keep my spirits up and my young daughter, I hurt for her as she sees her mom take this terrible treatment. They say it's like chemo they are not KIDDING! Well I'm not sure when Oprah will air but please notify me or something! I would love to see the show and hear the discussion in detail.
God Bless anyone with Hep. C and especially look over those on treatment.
A'
i would of watched steve on opera he is my biggest fan. i dont care that he has hepititis c he is still the same singer.
Yes!! Definitely would watch Steven Tyler talk about Hep C, and I hope he will go into great detail about the rigors of treatment. The disease and treatment impacted my life in ways I never anticipated and I am still working to recover physically and emotionally, five years later. The more people who speak out about this disease, the better.
Isn't it amazing how stupid people/teenagers can be...You do not contract Hep C just by using needles. It can be transmitted many ways, get smart. As for Steven Tyler good luck to you..I too was through this treatment but 2 different years & have found I am a nonresponder. The public needs to wake up, diseases happen to many people for many reasons...you may not know you have this disease until you are diagnosed with cancer... GOOD LUCK
Yes i would like to see Steven Tyler talk about Hep C on Oprah. My husband is currently in his 8th month of treatmeant for this disease. People need to understand just how deadly Hep C is. There are sympsoms but if you don't know anything about the disease, you'll will think that you just don't feel well. It also causes deep depression. The treatment has many side effects, most common are deep depression that has to be treated with antidepressants; weight & hair loss; severe eczema; feelings of hopelessness and despair. I can go on and on. Just today my husband called me from work crying saying he doesn't know what is wrong. His antidepressant is being increased from 40 mg to 60 mg daily. I just hope he can make through the treatment. I'm going to have to keep my eye open to see if Steven Tyler does go on Oprah. I don't want to miss it and I'll need to tape it for my husband to watch.
I would absolutely watch Steven Tyler discuss this on Opra or any other show. Hepatitis C is something that many people are reluctant to talk about, but which a lot of people suffer from.
I, too, underwent two years of treatment for Hepatitis C, and fortunately the treatment was successfull the second time around. I can really understand what Steven means when he talks about the debilitating effect of treatment on the body, and I really admire him for telling the public about this disease. Perhaps through his efforts, people will become more aware of the effects of Hepatitis C, and will get themselves tested before it's to late for them to do so. I admire Steven, and wish him good luck with beating his hepatitis C!
Absolutely i would watch him talk about this on Oprah. I am a lifelong fan of Steven Tyler's and Aerosmith's as well. He has always stood for what a success story should be, to me. He got clean and sober and went on to continue to front one of the most successful rock groups in music history...I admire him over and over again...so much so, that i named my son Tyler, after him. I am heartbroken over this...and wish him the very best...hopefully in his lifetime, and in the lifetimes of all those who suffer from this disease, that a cure can be found.
Steven is a great man, has survived a lot, without whining about it. Thank God he's survived to continue to share his wonderful gifts with the world. Rock on Steven, love from San Diego!
Toyz :)
I admire Steven for being honest and forthcoming. It's not a surprise since he is a former addict but it's also something a lot of people suffer from and it's nothing to be ashamed of, it's an illness and should be treated respectfully.
So yeah I'd watch Steven discuss it, not only is he a brilliant artist but a very well spoken man and I'd like to get his insight and hear more about his journey. I have been his fan for 32 years and he is amazingly strong so he will survive this too.
I have Hep C, was going through treatments and they are rough! I was 20 weeks into my 48 weeks of treatment when I started to have chest pain and trouble breathing. I had developed Sarcoidosis of the lungs (only 1% of people on Interferon will develop this). My doctor had no choice but to take me off of treatments for my Hep C. However they are unable to treat me for my Sarcoidosis, because it involves steroids and that would up my Hep C viral load, so I have no choice but to suffer through this disease, and I still have Hep C. I have heard so many success stories regarding the Interferon treatments, but what we need to keep in mind is that we do with any drugs take a risk for other complication. Best wishes to all with Hep C, it is a silent and hard to talk about disease.
Would I watch Steven Tyler on Oprah? Of course I would, I love Steven Tyler, I would watch him on anything. Can't wait to see ya this Saturday in concert.
Of course I would watch Steven on the Oprah Winfrey show or any other show he was on... I am a HUGE fan of Steven's and Aerosmith's as well. I have listened to them for as long as I can remember, since a was very small child, my parents played them constantly, now my children listen to them as well. I even attended an Aerosmith concert in NJ a few weeks ago 9 months pregnant! STEVEN SHOULD BE ABSOULTELY COMMENDED FOR COMING OUT REGARDING THIS ISSUE! You are talking about a band that has been around for more than 30 years, who have made it through thick and thin, stuck together, survived drug abuse, continued to make beautiful music and LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT! I'm with you Steven, and the rest of the boys -ALL THE WAY................
