Jared Leto: Gaining 60 Pounds for Movie Role “Wasn’t Any Fun”

Jared Leto, 34, gained the equivalent of a small-to-medium-sized child for the movie Chapter 27, in which he plays John Lennon assassinator Mark David Chapman. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman recently spoke to Sirius Satellite Radio about what it was like to gain the weight and how he balances his duel careers in music and film.
 
SIRIUS:
Someone told me that the music is more important to you [than films], and that’s the priority.
 
LETO:
I don’t make a lot of films, because – I’m very picky #1; and we’re very involved with the band…we’re having a tremendous amount of success right now with 30 Seconds to Mars, but, January and February, I made a movie [called Chapter 27] and I gained 62 pounds for it.
 
SIRIUS:
Did you feel lethargic and miserable that way, and you couldn’t wait to lose it?
 
LETO:
Yes.
 
SIRIUS:
Is there a healthy way to gain weight?
 
LETO:
No. You cannot do it. You know, I don’t eat meat, so I would eat a large Dominoes pizza, every night for dinner. And then, it actually wasn’t any fun. Some people think ‘oh it was enjoyable’, but I was force feeding myself to such an extent that I would throw up in the back of my throat every day. My body was falling apart, and it was just really bad.
 
SIRIUS:
Was it weird for your self-esteem to see yourself getting out of shape and not being you?
 
LETO:
It didn’t mess with my self esteem because I knew it was work. And I looked at it like climbing Mount Everest, or whatever a huge challenge would be for somebody, so I focused on that. But it did change the way people treated me...there was some funny situations where a very powerful person ran into me, and they looked at me, and they were like “Oh, You’ve just grown up, haven’t you?” (laughs)
 
8 days after I was done with the film, I fasted for 10 days, and I got right back on the road with 30 Seconds To Mars.

Jared went through hell for this role,and the transformation was scary...Having watched the film..I found it quite disturbing..Jared pulls it of to a "T"..Nobody could have taken the place of Jared..and just getting some "fat" actor would have been crap and would have ruined the film!!..Jared has experienced the full horror of being Chapman!! If I'd watched the film, not knowing Jared was in it..I would never have known it was him!!

i luv jared leto leto i dont care wat any of u say. the first movie i saw with him was urban legend i loved him in that and thats wat caused me to look him up on the computer the only thing i dont like about him is his hair. personally i think he looked better with short hair (he said he is a hippie and thats why it is long). but it really doesn't matter to me that much.

No I don't think Jared did it for money it's work(he endured it like every actor that is any good at all on screen/off) it's his mind set at that time to accomplish the goal and move on.

It has become apparent to me that Jared Leto is the consummate professional when it comes to acting and singing.The first film I ever saw him in was "Alexander".I had never seen the t.v. series"my so called life",or any other film that he had been in.After seeing "Alexander",I immediately began looking for his earlier work in film,of which there was quite a lot.I haven"t seen all of them yet.Right now I"m looking for"The thin red line".Iv"e been a film addict since ,at the age of six,my paternal grandmother introduced me to late night horror films.After seeing"Alexander",(have since seen Requiem and Cool and the Crazy,Panic Room and Fight Club)and having been brought to tears by the touching scenes between Leto and his co-star Colin Farrel,I have to say that it"s no accident that he is so believable in the roles he plays.He works damn hard.As far as the eyeliner goes,to each his own.He"s obviously doing something right cause he"s pissing some folks off.Rock
