Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard's publicist has confirmed to Us that the couple had a baby girl on Tuesday.
“Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal had a baby girl named Ramona yesterday in NYC. Mom, dad and baby are healthy and happy," says their rep, Amanda Silverman.
A source close to the couple tells Us exclusively that the baby weighs about 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
An Us source says Gyllenhaall had the baby at The Birthing Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. The couple left for the hospital on Tuesday morning at around 10 a.m. The baby girl was born sometime yesterday afternoon in the hospital's birthing center.
One floor down from the regular labor and delivery rooms, the Birthing Center suite-like rooms include hardwood floors as well as spa-sized jacuzzis and showers, and have no limit to the amount of guests that can be present during delivery. Most mothers labor in the Center's hydrotherapy tubs and give birth in bed. Epidurals are not given there.
“As much as I tried to imagine what pregnancy would be like, it’s totally different. It’s blown my mind every step of the way,” Gyllenhaal told Us earlier this year. “It feels great. It’s a real intense experience.”
Gyllenhaal, who said that she and Sarsgaard did not want to know the sex of the child, said on The Late Show with David Letterman that she had a feeling she would have a daughter. "You know, at first, I thought I really wanted a girl," she told the talk show host. "And then somewhere along the line, I sort of fell in love with the idea of having a boy. And then I got a real strong sense that it was a girl and fell in love with that again."
The couple of four years have been engaged since April 2006. As for their impending nuptials, the first-time mother told Us, “We don’t want to just go to City Hall. I want the fairy tale. I’ve had so many different incarnations of my fantasy wedding dress.”
Gyllenhaal has been working steadily since bursting on the scene as James Spader’s masochistic assistant in Secretary. This year alone, she’s appeared in the films Trust the Man, Sherrybaby, and World Trade Center, among others. She stars next in Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrell and Dustin Hoffman.
Sarsgaard has had critically acclaimed turns in films like Jarhead and Kinsey, and is currently shooting The Mysteries of Pittsburgh with Sienna Miller and Mena Suvari.
