Kate Moss Blasted for Saying Being Skinny Is Better Than Eating

Thursday – November 19, 2009 – 5:46pm

Kate Moss needs a new motto.

After she told Women's Wear Daily that she lived by the slogan, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," the model, 35, has been attacked by eating disorder groups for her "dangerous" viewpoint.

"Comments like this make it even more difficult for young people struggling with an eating disorder," said Mary George, a representative of a British eating disorder charity called Beat. "She probably doesn't realize how dangerous such comments can be."

In fact, that exact comment is a slogan posted on many Web sites that encourage girls not to eat and pushes those with anorexia or bulimia over the edge.

Model Katie Green also considered her statement "shocking and irresponsible," especially because Moss has a seven-year-old daughter, Lila Grace.

"Kate is a mother herself and how would parents with children suffering from eating disorders feel reading something like this?" said Green, who has been campaigning to stop the use of ultra-thin models in runway shows. "[Kate] should really have thought before she spoke like most of us do before giving interviews."

Moss' modeling agency, Storm, however, said her words were misconstrued.

"This was part of a longer answer Kate gave during a wider-ranging interview, which has unfortunately been taken out of context and completely misrepresented," the agency said in a statement. "For the record, Kate does not support this as a lifestyle choice."

I agree and disagree with this comment. I used to tell myself this when I was trying to loose weight and it worked, I wasn't overweight or anything I just wanted to be thin. And its true, being thin does feel great. Only thing is I was depriving myself of other foods like carbs and sweets and things. I would also be really cold all the time because I had so little body fat and my bmi was underweight. Then winter came and I started craving all that I had deprived myself of and I began to binge like crazy and over a few months I gained allot of the weight back. Im not overweight or anything, just normal. I think its true what Kate is saying that being fit and feeling good about yourself, pays off more then when you gorge yourself on treats and things. That being said, you should also take into consideration that your not perfect and if you have a piece of cake every once in a while its A-okay. =]

Yeah, because Kate Moss was totally just trying to say that people should be healthily slim. Are you seriously that delusional? She was obviously trying to say that being skinny-- not HEALTHY-- is awesome and totally worth not eating (as opposed to eating like a normal person-- that is to say, at all). This is not to say that obesity/overeating isn't as serious a problem as anorexia, or that someone who said "Being fat is great, let's go get ice cream!" wouldn't also be damaging. But her comment is in no way encouragement of healthy eating, it's encouragement of not eating. She didn't say "no greasy fast food tastes as good as being healthy and fit!" And just because she wasn't the first to say it doesn't mean it isn't reprehensible. If I say we should kill all the blacks, I sure wouldn't be the first, but it still sure would be incredibly stupid, ignorant, and completely unacceptable.

It's funny to me that she is getting all this backlash when she isn't even the one to first utter those words. I remember first reading that motto and then living by it while struggling with my own ED in school..8 years ago. And you know what, in a totally different context that motto is spot on. So many Americans gorge themselves with food often without even really tasting or savoring it. Being healthy, fit and full of energy and life does feel better than all the junk food and chocolate in the world.

To me: Kate was only saying that nothing to her tastes so good that she has to give in to the unhealthy pleasures that would make her fat. I am seriously overweight, but I could do something about it like get off my lazy butt and exercise or eat right. I don't though, so I can't sit here and knock the skinny people who take their health/weight seriously. Yeah, some girls have eating disorders that make them not want to eat. That comes from your family lifestyle growing up. I don't believe that most of them were born wanting to starve themselves. It's all in the head. Therefore, we can't blame some actress for expressing a slogan she lives by. People should start taking some responsibility for their own actions. I'm sick of everyone being all up in the celeb's personal lives. Kate looks like she only eats what she has to -to survive, as it should be.

as long as a person has a good personality and is genuine and nice - no talking behind their back will happen, but if someone comes off as a b!tch like you VB, then there will be some talking. And not everyone who goes to the bar is looking for a guy - some people go to hang out with their friends and have fun. Not just to run around like a floozie

What pisses me off is that obesity is a way bigger problem than anorexia or bulemia and yet who gets more shiznit? The skinny chicks...overeating will kill you as well. But you watch those fat people shows and everyone's crying "oh the poor fat people" but if an anorexic girl is on a talk show they get reprimanded. Reprimand the fat people! And stop hating on me for thinking it's disgusting because it is. By the way I'm 5'5" and I weigh 135, I have a tiny waist big boobies and a big booty...and I love it! I guess my point is let's hate on fat people as much as we do on skinny people, and please don't get mad at for talking like this about them, they deserve it, they shouldn't have gotten fat.

Having suffered from eating disorders too, I find what she said DISGUSTING!!! Even if it's true that being skinndy tastes better than food but WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO CHOSE!!! If things (and rolemodels) were normal, WE COULD ENJOY BOTH FOOD AND OUR BODIES!!!

Kate Moss has starved herself to have the body of a goddess. She is wonderful for stating the truth. there is a special tribute to her at Pro-anna.net where others exclaim her dedication to having a heavenly bod.

  • November 20, 2009 - 1:51pm Tall Average Girl Says:

VB, did anon @11:30 say she was 5'4"? I did not see that anywhere in her post. I'm 5'10" and weigh btw 155-160. I don't consider myself overweight. Secondly, 'fat' people are NOT the cause for high health care. You do, however, come off as being very bitter. I personally do NOT go to the bar to get noticed by men. That does make you appear shallow. There is nothing wrong with being thin (too thin I think looks weird) nothing wrong with being pretty, but why is it the a plus sized girl is considered ugly? Just a question...
  • November 20, 2009 - 1:32pm Seriously? Says:

VB...you are just as bad as Jennifer...both of you can go burn in hell together.
  • November 20, 2009 - 12:00pm VB Says:

How many of the fatties on this post are jealous and call thin people "shallow"? How many of them talk behind a pretty, thin woman's back because of their jealousy? And 160 on an average woman (5'4") is FAT! Don't complain when you go to a bar and no man is looking at you, unless you go to a loser bar in Disney World where everyone is FAT!!! You can thank the fat people for the high cost of health care!
  • November 20, 2009 - 11:09am Get over yourselves Says:

I love all the self-righteous people on here who stand up for the fat disgusting slobs that seem to be everywhere nowadays. If some model is able to whip you into a frenzy over one line about how she feels about herself, then you are going to have a hard time in life. Hello, her career is based on her being a toothpick.
  • November 20, 2009 - 11:02am Jackie Says:

Fat doesn't sell, ok I get it - the movie star life isn't for me. lol, but who wants that life with drama, drugs, and constant critisizing? I have a wonderful life and I AM BEAUTIFUL no one can tell me otherwise. Big can be beautiful. Life is more than just skin. Nothing is better than confidence. I guess people never get over bullying to make themselves feel better. I'm not even mad at anyone on here, just laughing. HAHAHAHAHA
  • November 20, 2009 - 10:47am Clarissa Says:

I was in a Weight Watchers group once, and the coach would tell us "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels". Meaning "don't indulge yourself constantly". Kate could have worded herself better... but it's hard to think on an empty stomach.
  • November 20, 2009 - 10:41am VB Says:

HA HA HA I think it's funny that people slam Jennifer for making negative comments about fat people when many of these posters criticize Kate for her drug problems. What a bunch of hypocrites! The same people criticizing Jennifer have probably accused people of being drunks, unfit parents and drug addicts. It's all the same. And fat is gross, period. You can justify the reasons all you want, but at the end of the day, no one wants to look at a fat person. Fat doesn't sell.
  • November 20, 2009 - 10:38am Don't make assumptions Says:

I wouldn't put any stock into anything someone who has lead the lifestyle she has says. Also, who wants diet advice from someone in a profession where designers have heartlessly referred to their models as "human hangers"? Oh, and by the way I am thin. I shouldn't have to state that, but I just had to put to rest another ignorant philosophy, the one that says if you don't like what Kate Moss said you are "fat". However, I have to wonder even if someone is overweight and dislikes what she says why does it have to be about jealousy or weight? If people don't like someone of another religion has said, are they an atheist, if someone doesn't like what someone of another race said, are they a racist, if someone doesn't like what a woman in general has said are they a misogynist? Do you see how ridiculous assumptions are? Those making these assumptions don't know the people here, and shouldn't make uninformed assumptions about them.

a lot of fat pigs who can't control their appetites know she is right, it Does feel great to look good. so now they are on a jealousy binge.
