Loving actress Ruth Negga is a breakout style star, nabbing a spot on every best-dressed list through awards season — Stylish takes a look at her top beauty moments
Beauty of the Day: 5 Secrets to Ruth Negga’s Style
The Irish-Ethiopian star, 35, nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role stole our hearts as the real-life civil rights heroine Mildred Loving, and our jaws drop every time she hits the red carpet. At the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 7, she donned a dramatic floor-length Dolce & Gabbana black guipure lace gown with fringed sleeves, adding color with a monochromatic makeup palette of rose on lips and cheeks. Loving was honored alongside seven other actors with the Virtuoso Award, which salutes actors who give breakthrough performances in film. Addressing the importance of the story behind Loving, Negga said the film “isn’t a black story and it isn’t just an American story. It’s my story, and it’s the world’s story.”
Silver belle! At the Golden Globes Awards, Negga hit the carpet in a custom sequin Louis Vuitton gown with a gold zipper in the front and embellished buckles down the sides. Her eyes were also awash in metallics. Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis painted on a “top heavy” effect with color concentrated on the upper lids. She applied burgundy eye shadow, then brushed on a coat of Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre cream color in New Moon, a shimmering topaz.
With her giant, soulful chocolate eyes and close-cropped hair, Negga could be mistaken for a roaring twenties lounge singer. Never was that more apparent than at AARP’s 16th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards on February 6. At the event, Negga accepted the award for best picture for Loving clad in a romantic antique-pastel and gold high-neck, long-sleeved gown. Hairstylist Vernon Francois fashioned finger waves and Negga's makeup was a wash of sheer shades.
Negga hit the red carpet in short, lacy frocks for the June 6, 2016 premiere of Warcraft: The Beginning in a high, lacy neckline. The ruffles accentuated her black rimmed eyes, which were offset by matte beige lipstick. Even more fabulous: her natural curls piled high. Francois often uses Re-Vamp Moisture Spray from his eponymous line on the star.
